Amsterdam screams for culture in twelve pictures

Last Saturday, 4 pm sharp, about twenty thousand culture lovers cried their hearts out for at least one hour in front of Amsterdam’s City Theatre at Leidseplein. The ‘Netherlands scream for culture’ initiative encouraged all these people to scream on top of their lungs and featured speakers such as Ivo Niehe, Sophie Hilbrand and Cornald Maas against ‘the impoverishment of the cultural life’.

Fromanteel ‘The Making Of’ in twelve pictures

A couple of weeks ago Yoga wrote about the launch party of Fromanteel's 'Luxury Credit Card Holder', and promised we'd get back to you with the 'making of' photos for the promotional shoot. Today is the time. Our befriended bloggers at Ajanaku wrote a nice article about the photo shoot, which took place in the old Restaurant Koevoet in the Jordaan area. Photographer Reinier van der Aart was heavily inspired by the Hungarian artist Brassaï, and did a great job in recreating the high society 1920s Parisian atmosphere in the series.

Yesterday, a demonstration took place to preserve the squatted home of Schijnheilig, a creative collective that strives to use vacant space as free, non-commercial meeting points for art, music, poetry and more. Well, here’s the problem they are facing: new mayor van der Laan, enforcing the new law against squatting, ordered to clear their building, which would mean that the gypsy vibe of Schijnheilig would soon be gone and that their home would become another empty space in Amsterdam once again.

On rainy Sundays (typically a November thing), when all I feel like doing is sitting on the couch, I grab a GUP magazine and immerse myself into the work of international photographers for inspiration and find out about all the best museum exhibitions to visit once the rain has cleared away.
