The colours of my wardrobe usually depend on the time of the year. I like wearing black and other calm and dark tones in autumn and wintertime, but I unsurprisingly start putting on bright-coloured clothes once spring or summertime come. I have noticed a similar situation on the streets of many European capitals. And although Dutch people have never been grey, still, I have noticed that the amount of bright-coulored outfits on the streets of Amsterdam is directly proportional to every additional degree in temperature. Most Amsterdam locals would never take a stroll along Central Station’s main street, also known as the Damrak. And I can’t blame them. The street is designed for tourists: it’s filled with souvenir shops, kebab sheds and voluptuous girls serving drinks. Topless. But please take a minute to look bit closer. Right across the Beurs van Berlage you’ll find a tiny door with ‘Hotel’ written above it. Not very mind blowing at first sight. Look again. This is the gateway to a world where fashion meets architecture, design meets functionality and Amsterdam meets Europe. (..more)
It was a sunny weekend in July last year. Daan de Jongh and Mercedita Ramirez were taking a break away from Amsterdam life and made Madrid their city for a few days. During one of their many strolls through back alleys, they happened to bump into a very small orthopaedic shoe store. It was pretty run-down with a broken sign outside and not a great selection of shoes. But there was one model that sprang out; one shoe standing tall above the rest. Two weeks ago I attended an event organized by this young and innovative shop and I was amazed by the atmosphere and the beautiful place itself. You can find a huge collection of accessories and clothes and you will be fascinated by the store itself. Only two weeks open and the word spreads around fast. “There’s a new Australian place just near the Albert Cuijp, You should really visit” is what they say. My friend is one of those people. She visited three times in the two weeks it has been open and told me it is a must-go. She told me that the food was amazingly good and didn’t mind going with me for the 4th time. (..more)
Did you know that a few months ago a new fresh Italian brand opened in the center of Amsterdam? Its name is Brandy Melville. Being Italian and knowing the label well from since I was in college, I was quiet surprised to see one of my favourite shops in a main shopping street of Amsterdam: the Leidsestraat. What I always liked about this store is the inspiration taken from the L.A. lifestyle. When you enter the shop, you can see pictures of Hollywood celebrities on the walls and you can observe new vintage clothes on the shelves. (..more)
There’s no need to be browsing for hours through the most fashionable Dutch online store anymore, because this online store has gone offline. On April 6th The Collector opened a brand new concept store in a thriving district, the Pijp. In a cute street the gorgeous store pops out. It looks very chiq and Parisians from the outside but when you step inside it does even more. It looks like an atelier that’s been build into a store. A long corridor leads to on open space with more windows and even higher walls. A place as special as the pieces, because most of the labels are not commonly available in other stores. (..more)
The use of scarves dates back as far as ancient Rome. The Romans were the first to use them, but only to wipe their neck and face from sweat in a hot climate. Later the scarf became a widely used fashion accessory worn by both men and women. And today I can hardly imagine a wardrobe without one. (..more)
This week the sun broke through the clouds, allowing people to overflow terraces while leaving their winter coats at home. Everybody’s walking around with sunglasses on, women start to show off their legs in skirts and summer jackets are pulled out of the closet; it’s spring! Thanks to the rising temperatures people and their (extravagant) accessories are now uncovered, out in the open and much easier to spot.
