Waterlooplein, the nicest square in the city

Waterlooplein, the nicest square in the city

Jun 1, 2012 |  by  |  Spots

Since a few weeks I rediscovered Waterlooplein as being one of the nicest squares in all of Amsterdam. I’ve been living at Waterlooplein for a little while now, and I haven’t been bored for a second. Unfortunately, the square has become more of a tourist attraction than the local hotspot it deserves to be. (..more)

It’s Sunday. You came home at 6 O’ clock this morning after partying all night. And the two nights before. Now you’re up, you’re lazy and tired and you crave food but don’t want to cook, let alone go to the supermarket. What are you going to do? You could just sit on the couch all day, watching 24Kitchen. But what you should do on Sunday February 19th is go out and enjoy the food at the NeighbourFood Market at the Westergasterrein. (..more)

Meet and Eat: Teatime Extraordinaire at Gartine

Dec 8, 2011 |  by  |  Spots

In a little alley near Spui, I found a little piece of heaven. After a friend of mine took me there for lunch, it stole my heart. Gartine is a tiny little place, easily unnoticed in one of the least attractive alleys of Amsterdam. (..more)

Sometimes you pass a store window that immediately draws your attention. Walking through the Haarlemmerdijk, I noticed such a window: it had a poem written all over it in white, handwritten letters, and there were flowers in little coloured bottles on the floor. I just had to take a look inside, and what I found was a concept store I have to tell you about. (..more)

Pop-up Store: The ShowAtelier

A while ago I introduced you to newly-graduated fashion designer Kirsten Popkema. In the meantime, a lot has happened to her, and her career has taken a few steps forward. She and her 'partner in fashion' Hye Yoo Mi have opened a pop-up store and atelier in the Magna Plaza, Amsterdam. The store is called the ShowAtelier, because it's a showroom and workspace in one. Kirsten and Yoo Mi are there almost everyday, working on new clothes and headgear. (..more)

Sophie's Choice: collage artist Charly Roussel

Sophie’s Choice: collage artist Charly Roussel

Let me introduce you to Charly Roussel, who's only 28 years old but has already lived a full and inspiring life. Charly was born in Paris, but he grew up in Austria in a commune founded by Austrian artist Otto Muehl, who was known for participating in the 'Aktion' movement, which was a bizarre and controversial modern art movement that stood for anti-aestheticism and anti-consumerism. After that, Charly lived in Portugal for 7 years before coming to Amsterdam, where he has been living for the past 4 years studying jazz music. (..more)

Sophie’s Choice: painter Onno Lolkema

Sophie’s Choice: painter Onno Lolkema

Onno Lolkema is one of those artists whose style you immediately recognize when you see his work. His paintings are colourful and outspoken, and there's an interesting contrast between technical drawing and a more comic-like way of painting. Onno gets his ideas from everyday life, the daily media and his own brain. This is probably why his paintings are all a bit absurdist. (..more)

Kirsten Popkema is a young woman from Amsterdam, and she is ready to take on the fashion world and become a great fashion designer. What I think makes her stand out are her crazy sources of inspiration, and the way she makes them fashionable. Her work starts at a concept, a very abstract idea, that she then turns into wearable and desirable clothes. For example, have a look at her hairy underwear collection, called 'Je veux ces cheveux' (I want that hair): sexy, beautiful underwear made with hair, inspired by -who else- Bob Ross and his intriguing hairdo.
