Trash Humpers lifts Hollywoods veil over society

Trash Humpers lifts Hollywoods veil over society

Quite a few words come to mind when watching the new movie by Harmony Korine, Trash Humpers. Surreal, scary, disturbing and melancholic, but also beautifully put together. To point out one general idea would be impossible, it’s so much more. The main characters are filming each other, the editing is sloppy and this makes it look like you’re watching either an old VHS or a modern snuff movie. In the end this turns out to be an essential part of the beauty, fitting perfectly into the main theme of this movie. (..more)

Craving a credit card at ‘THE STORE By AMFI’

Every couple of months the AMFI Statement Store changes its interior and collections. The store is a project from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute and is designed and managed by its students. The last couple of times it has been really sweet and feminine but this time the fashionistas are going a little bit more 'street'. The new design is more masculine, geometric, edgy and features credit cards.. Well trust me, when you see the new clothing in store you will need one! (..more)

5 Days On, a wonderful fusion of art and electronic music

5 Days Off has an incredible line-up this year, but you probably knew that already! (And if not, that's definitely not because of us not informing you enough about it). But did you know that they also have an art programme called 5 Days On? Of course the festival wouldn't be itself without its electronic tunes, so almost all of the projects feature music. I have taken the liberty of picking out some gems, just for you. (..more)

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Day 3 – .MARLOES BLAAS.

The most promising designer at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week has to be Marloes Blaas. This young designer never went to a fashion academy but showed us a collection that won't be forgotten soon. 'A woman's merit', as the show was called, is an homage to strong women in dark times. Especially those whom had to start working when their men went off to war. I had a short talk with her about this after the show where she told me some more.. (..more)

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Day 3 - Addy van den Krommenacker

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Day 3 – Addy van den Krommenacker

A full moon, a forest and river. All these images were shown at the Addy van den Krommenacker show. Unfortunately nobody really noticed it because they were too busy watching the 60 (!!) outfits and dresses pass by. Van den Krommenacker stayed true to his signature style of fairytale dresses and the occasional suit. Even the models couldn't suppress a smile and seemed to have genuine fun, floating their dresses alluringly across the catwalk. (..more)

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Day 2 - Individuals

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Day 2 – Individuals

There is only one word to describe the new collection by Individuals: wow. It is dark and mysterious, but oh so sexy. The collection is named after the French word for orgasm: ‘Le Petit Mort', because they wanted to bring across a feeling of completely letting go, that rush of adrenaline when everything goes black.. After seeing the red laced-up boots that went far over the knees and a knitted dress that uncovered a lot of skin, they definitely had my heart racing with excitement. (..more)

Dogs, a dead bunny and retired people at De Brakke Grond

Dogs, a dead bunny and retired people at De Brakke Grond

'Daily Whisper', the first major solo exposition from Sarah Carlier, recently opened at Flemish cultural hotspot De Brakke Grond. The show is divided into two parts: 'Daily Whisper', and her latest project, 'Vier jaar, drie doden, klamme oksels en een foetus' (Four years, three dead bodies, sweaty armpits and a fetus). They both consist of photos and installations, and discuss traditional cultures and people's worn-in habits. It sounded like near perfection to me, since I love folkloric costumes and one of my guilty pleasures is to sit on a terrace with a glass of wine, just to watch people go by. (..more)

winterSALON/, a dialogue between art, photography, illustrations and fashion

From the 15th to the 30th of January you will be able to see well-known designers, but also some fresh new talent. No, I’m not talking about the Amsterdam International Fashion Week (it does however coincide with this), this is about winterSALON/. A dialogue between art, photography, illustrations and fashion. An initiative by SALON/, who want to spark a discussion about fashion and its ability to cross 'design' borders, and that's exactly what makes this so interesting. (..more)
