It’s Sunday and you’re hungover, angry at the world, at bartenders and most of all: yourself. No worries, we feel the same. That’s why we’ve invented Sunday Roast. A bi-weekly conversational ‘column’. A written one. Online. Every other Sunday, Mark and Sabrina vent about the horrible burdens and ungodly mishaps of their 21st century life. Usually reserved only for bars, we bring our problems right into your home. Sharing is sexy, and a problem shared is a problem halved.. You are cordially invited to our pity party. (..more)

It's Sunday and you're hungover, angry at the world, at bartenders and most of all: yourself. No worries, we feel the same. That's why we've invented a new item on Overdose.am: Sunday Roast. A bi-weekly 'column' that's in fact more a conversation. (..more)

Guys, stop reading - for your own good. This is a women-only kinda post. I just read about the shopping night Mélangetrois and Designers-United.com are having tomorrow night! Sure, it's short notice but come on. All you need to go on this little spending spree is a pair of flat shoes and an iron will because a lot of people will be fighting for that last dress in your size. (..more)

Take the Overdose.am tour at the Prix de Rome

Ever heard of the Prix the Rome? If you're studying something that has to do with culture (like me) you probably have. It used to be a scholarship which granted the student three years of studying in Rome. Now it's 'just' a moneyprize, but a very prestigous one at that. It originated in France in 1663 and was introduced in the Netherlands by Lodewijk Napoleon in 1807. As I said, the Prix the Rome is still being held, and you can view the exposition right here, in Amsterdam. (..more)

18hrs festival in twelve pictures

So, one sunny afternoon Annelijn and I wanted nothing more than just be lazy and eat an enormous breakfast on the balcony. We actually made sure the breakfast was realised (white beans in tomatosauce and hashbrowns is where it's at y'all!) but afterwards we weren't lazy at all. We got onto our bikes and cycled all the way to Zaandam for the 18hrs festival. Let me start by saying I'm mostly very positive and almost always have a good time at parties. But let me tell you guys; I'm never going outside the ring road again! (..more)

Local Rockstars: King Jack at a mad tea party

Local Rockstars: King Jack at a mad tea party

Jul 9, 2011 |  by  |  Music

I’ve always wanted to fall down a rabbit hole and explore a completely different world. That’s what Amsterdam- based band King Jack made me do, in a way. Only this rabbit hole didn’t lead to a fantasy world but one filled with rock ‘n roll. So what better way to introduce you to these guys than a mad tea party? On a rooftop in Amsterdam, accompanied by ‘tea’ and cupcakes, we talked about their record, inspirations, and even marriage. (..more)

The National on brotherly love, baseball and experimental music

Last Wednesday was the European première of The Long Count, a multimedia performance by the indie rockers from The National. It was part of the Holland Festival, which is held from the 1st to the 26th of June. The brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner (who both play guitar in the band) teamed up with video artist Matthew Ritchie to create something that was just incomprehensible. It’s inspired by Popol Vuh, a text about the creation of this world which includes the Maya calendar, or the Long Count. (..more)

Lots of beautiful men in the new L'HOMO

Lots of beautiful men in the new L’HOMO

Recently, Annelijn and I had the incredibly hard task to attend the launch of Linda de Mol’s annual magazine L’HOMO. Interviewing athletes, drinking ridiculously expensive champagne and giggly blushing about men in surprisingly small swimming trunks: it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. (..more)

Oh you pretty things combines art with high-end hairdressing

One day I woke up, completely fed up with my hair. Inspired by Zooey Deschanel in 500 Days of Summer I became obsessed with a fringe. Impulsivity drove me out of bed to get my hair cut, and since my regular hairdresser was being a pain I thought of a tip a friend gave me. It was this morning that I walked into Oh you pretty things and let me tell you: I’m never going back to my old hairdresser. (..more)

Failed architecture from Almere to Zagreb

Failed architecture from Almere to Zagreb

Apr 19, 2011 |  by  |  Event

If people fall, they get a scar. If you would look at a city as a person, its buildings would be its scars. But a city can't fall down, so how would it get its scars? Probably because the architecture 'failed'. It's reminiscent of a time we're not particularly proud of (the Reichsbank in Berlin for instance) or it doesn't fulfil its original purpose any more (like EUR in Rome). Can architecture be said to fail? This, and more questions, will be answered in Failed Architecture: the new series of discussion at De Verdieping. (..more)
