Get indulged at the new Samsøe & Samsøe store
I'm a sucker for Scandinavian design. Although Danish, Swedish and Norwegian brands have been popping up in a variety of Dutch stores for a while now, not many of them have a store of their own. But I have some good news for my fellow Northern enthusiasts, and fashion aficionados in particular: Danish fashion brand Samsøe & Samsøe has opened its first store outside of Scandinavia, and it is located in our very own Utrechtsestraat! Off The Record at Rialto reveals the story behind the music
If you’re not the music buff, stop reading. If you are, proceed. For those of you who have an infinite hunger for music and, more specifically, the story behind it: a new ritual might be coming your way. Every month at film theater Rialto, guest programmer Christian Pazzaglia will pick one music documentary – golden oldie or new kid on the block – and give an in-depth introduction to the film. Every screening is followed by an after party inspired by the documentary’s musical style. (..more)
The best films of 2012 at Kriterion’s housewarming
It's the beginning of a new year, and so it's time to reflect on what the past twelve months have brought us. A love that rocked your world, or one that stayed unanswered, sorrow you didn't think you could overcome or joy you didn't think you'd ever experience. Or maybe just life as usual. Whatever it may be in your life, it most likely also happened in one or more films that were released this year. For the third year in a row, Kriterion and Cineville are hosting De Beste Films at which the top-rated films of the past year will be shown on the big screen one more time. (..more)
The new Belair camera is the next step in Lomography’s world quest
Slowly but surely it's been popping up more and more in the streets of Europe's capitals in the past few years, with its vintage, almost toy-like design and deep-coloured, authentic images: the Lomography camera. Holding on to the analogue technique in these high-tech times, it makes its owner feel like he's working a genuine craft - even if this is to be attributed more to the camera's standard features than to himself. I sure did fall for Lomography's charm instantly when I bought my first one two years ago, the Diana Mini. But now a new camera is the object of my desire: the Belair, to be released this Thursday. Modern Classics in Kriterion offer insights in fashion, film and photography
Whether it’s Modeselektor and Apparat, Moleskine and Trouw or Paradiso and Concerto: we all love a nice collaboration. This month Kriterion and &Foam team up for a selection of four fashion classics to be shown every Monday in January. Each film is chosen and introduced by a fashion scene insider, respectively curator Martijn Daniel Nekoui, up-and-coming photographer Sophie van der Perre, designer Frans Molenaar and well-known photographer Paul Bellaart. Queue up, I’d say. (..more)
Shadow Cities shows a new take on hiphop and violence at Trouw De Verdieping
Sometimes it's only a good thing to change horizons. Where Trouw usually is your spot to experience the latest in techno and house, next week will offer an insight in another musical genre that evolved in the context of the deindustrialization of cities: hiphop. It's time for some serious business, though. With Uprising. Hip Hop & The LA Riots - that premiered at this year's IDFA - this edition of Shadow Cities takes us back to the early nineties, when major riots erupted in LA after four white policemen were founded innocent for the brutal beating of Afro-American taxi driver Rodney King. Let your vintage dreams come true at PHINTAGE by Helen Yard
Let me start with a little confession: I'm a rookie when it comes to vintage shopping. The explanation? I like stores to be neat and orderly – not a standard feature of second-hand shops – and to be honest... I just like my clothes to be new. However, this doesn’t mean I’ll look the other way when something interesting in the vintage area comes by. So when PHINTAGE by Helen Yard opened around the corner I just had to go take a look. And guess what? It’s neat, orderly and the clothes are simply fantastic. (..more)
