Interview with New York Times Magazine photo editor Kathy Ryan

Mar 29, 2012 |  by  |  Art, Event

I was given the opportunity to interview Kathy Ryan, the award-winning Director of Photography of the New York Times Magazine. She has worked with the publication for more than twenty-five years; in that time, the Magazine has been recognized with numerous photography awards. Ryan turned out to be such a kind and interesting person. The interview goes quite deep into the ways of portraying "truth" through photography. (..more)

The new film museum EYE

The new film museum EYE

On the 5th of April the new film museum EYE will open its doors to the public. A building that has evolved into an architectural gem on the IJ bank, next to the Shell tower. This new addition to Amsterdam’s rural landscape was designed by Delugan Meissle Associated Architects (try spelling that on the phone), it certainly has a different feel to it from every side you look at it. Take the ferry from the NDSM wharf back to Central Station and see how the building changes shape, a pretty cool experience. This was exactly one of the goals of the architects, to combine multiple perspectives in the design. (..more)

TORCH Gallery presents The Shapeshifter

Mar 28, 2012 |  by  |  Art, Event

TORCH Gallery presents an interesting exhibition called The Shapeshifter, where a series of beautiful paintings by Anya Janssen is showcased. It’s difficult to capture the feeling I had when looking at her paintings, which are full of discrepancies: innocence and eeriness, both comforting and sinister. (..more)

The artist Steve Mc Queen who actually lives and works in Amsterdam and London (Hi Steve) has had numerous exhibitions in the Tate modern, Museum of Modern Art Paris, and many more. His latest claim to fame was with the widely discussed film Shame. Mc Queen will give the city of Amsterdam a change of scenery. A Perfect Day, for a comic exhibition at the Westergasfabriek

A Perfect Day, for a comic exhibition at the Westergasfabriek

Feb 15, 2012 |  by  |  Art, Event

At the Openbare verlichting on the Westergasterrein you can view the exhibition A Perfect Day. This internationally appealing comic exposition has over 200 drawings. Visiting this exhibition was a blast, if you want to have a couple of good laughs definitely stop by. There’s something for everyone’s taste. I really liked how the show does not take itself too serious, the works are presented as they are and not displayed on some sort of (art) pedestal. (..more)

Risen from the ashes: Gallery La Raven

Risen from the ashes: Gallery La Raven

When I was recently cycling past the Herengracht my eye was drawn to a tragic sight: a building with a burnt down roof. At the same time I spotted lights and a beautiful chandelier on the inside. Curious as I am, this weird combination lured me into taking a look inside. It turned out to be a beautifully restored place. A new kind of gallery with several rooms where all sorts of things can take place. From art shows to network events to musical performances. (..more)

Larry Fink, The Vanities exhibition at Wouter van Leeuwen

For over a decade Larry Fink has been documenting the very exclusive parties organized by Vanity Fair. Where glamour exhuberates at every corner, and botox is always present. Celebrities hope to be depicted at their best (kinda like everyone else), Larry on the other hand seems to have had a different idea. (..more)

The state of the art in Dutch theatre photography

The state of the art in Dutch theatre photography

Jan 5, 2012 |  by  |  Art, Event

Theatre photography has always stood in the shadow of other types of photography. While art photography is slowly gaining more momentum in the art world no-one ever sees anything being published about theatre photography, until now. TM, a magazine about theatre, dance and music took it upon itself to find out what was going on in this specific field of photography, and they dedicated a entire magazine to the expertise. (..more)
