Tonight, Canvas will host the very first Amsterdam-based edition of Shortcutz, a new weekly event that showcases short films. The idea of Shortcutz is to provide a stage for national short-filmmakers and to give the audience sneak peeks into their newest projects. (..more)

When I was a kid, my parents really wanted me to turn out smart, so they kept bringing me to theatres, museums and all sorts of other cultural places. I remember always being angry and bored on these days and secretly just wanting to go the playground and eat happy meals instead. My brother (equally bored) and me were constantly annoying my parents and making fun of what we thought was 'so called' art. We acted like we were connoisseurs and pointed at power sockets and the fire hoses and mocked our parents by sarcastically joking about the 'wonderful colouring and design'. (..more)

Last Sunday, Overdose.am hosted already the fourth edition of the ultimate relaxing, but absolutely fashionable Zondagmiddag, this time at Pllek. Once again, we hung on leather sofas, got ourselves some hangover food and enjoyed a haircut or pre-Movember shave. In the lovely storehouse we shared an unforgettable shopping experience, with more local designed clothes and vintage highlights. Combined with the good food and relaxing atmosphere in the restaurant it was the perfect Sunday afternoon. (..more)

Been partying to hard last weekend at ADE? Got ringing ears from all the beats and tiresome toes from all the dancing? Actually feel like staying at home this weekend? Well don’t! Because we got the best recipe for last Monday’s hangover: a brand new edition of Zondagmiddag! You already knitted at Roest, hottub-a-dubbed at VLLA, and hoolahooped the day away at Studio/K. Now, we have picked a brand new location to host Overdose.am’s travelling cultural fair, and it will be at Amsterdam’s hotspot Pllek! (..more)

BAUT, new kid on the concrete block

BAUT, new kid on the concrete block

Last week our city got just a little better with the opening of new restaurant BAUT in the Wibautstraat. Many will disagree (including me), but this street is sometimes referred to as the ugliest street in Amsterdam. Due to economic problems after WWII, the street got filled with large concrete buildings and became a victim of béton brut architecture. During the last decade it has been exposed to all sorts of renovations and demolitions, making the street view even worse. But sometimes, at places that appear to be grey and soulless at first, the most interesting things happen. (..more)

Let's get Spanish at the official opening of Mercat

Let’s get Spanish at the official opening of Mercat

Sep 11, 2012 |  by  |  Food, Spots

Last Sunday my photographer and me went to the official opening of Mercat, a new restaurant based on the famous Mercado de la Boqueria in Barcelona. Situated on the Oostelijke Handelskade, right next to Panama, its interior appears to be a combination of industrial design with a rural touch. The architecture does indeed resemble the Boqueria and although this is a real restaurant, you get the feeling you wandered off the Ramblas to scout some fresh octopus and a few juicy tomatoes. Magneet Festival in twelve pictures

There has been a lot of talk about Magneet Festival lately. And although all my friends kept saying it was the best festival ever, I was still somewhat skeptical. Judging by the name, I feared that it might have something to do with science. But, this Saturday I suddenly felt like doing something courageous, so I jumped on my bike and took a trip to where I thought the world ended. Across the endless Schellingwouderbrug, instead of where I thought would be Limbo, I discovered this little village, where houses are made out of tents and white sand covers the city asphalt. Theatre is just not as cool as it used to be. The times when we all wanted to see royal tragedies and kings in tights stabbing each other with bloody daggers are over. Nowadays, plays are almost exclusively visited by people over 50. Last month I went to see A Midsummer Night's Dream dream with my mom (53), and indeed it felt like I got trapped in a home for the elderly. Young people go to museums, arthouse films, and expositions, but just don’t seem to be setting foot in the theatre. (..more)
