They have the the 24 hour permit, they sell the best vintage at the Night Bazaar, have the tastiest ‘kaasbroodjes’, and they host numerous cultural lectures; our city’s hotspot Trouw gives us exactly what we want. And it doesn’t end there. Next week they’ll bring contemporary art in the form of video projections and performances into their cultural cosmos. Expanding the boundaries of the present-day club scene, Trouw seeks for new opportunities to bring their visitors high class entertainment. (..more)

This weekend it’s a time for the second edition of boutique festival Buiten Westen. This initiative of six Amsterdam-based musical collectives brings your childhood fantasies to life, setting up a dreamworld with extravagant decor, exotic treats and electronic highlights. Among many other international artists we find Kompakt-baby Rune Reilly Kolsch, better known as Kölsch, and one of my recent personal favourites. A good opportunity to ask him some questions before he leaves us in awe closing on the Next Monday's Hangover stage, this Saturday. (..more)

Last weekend, the sun-drenched Gaasperpark hosted Open Air, one of the biggest electronic music festivals our capital has to offer. Somewhere between the creative acts, musical highlights and culinary treats, Mikey Nice’s colourful Disco Bingo was getting it on through the grape vine. With his small posture and his eternal smile, Mikey is probably the cutest DJ you’ll ever meet. (..more)

Guest of Honor: Saschienne, much more than a perfect couple

After a high-tech minimal performance of Boris Brejcha at DGTL, the low-key melodic sound of Sascha Funke and Julienne Desagne, collectively known as Saschienne, caused a bit of an (undeserved) anticlimax in the overcrowded Analogue stage. They’ve been part of the Kompakt family since 2008. Characterized by the media as ‘technomantic’, they produce deep melodic electronic music and give away thrilling live performances with a romantic feel. After their gig we sat together at a deserted picnic table and talked about love, music and the media. (..more)

In a world where creativity is just a mouse click away, it has become more and more difficult to recognize genuine talent. These modern times have brought us numerous foolproof devices which have awoken little artists in all of us. The times where only practised photographers with expensive gear could make accurate representations of reality is long gone. Nowadays you can shoot a high resolution photo and make it look like it was developed in the '50s with just a tab on your smartphone. And if you need some background information, you’re just milliseconds away from finding out how cave paintings evolved into the Renaissance. (..more)

Find out what pain sounds like at the Flamenco Biënnale

Find out what pain sounds like at the Flamenco Biënnale

Jan 18, 2013 |  by  |  Event, Music

Next week, the Flamenco Biënnale will bring Spanish flair to our capital. Flamenco has its roots in southern Spain, where it evolved to a combination of traditional Andalusian and Romani styles. The canto reflects the typical intense temperament of these people, and is all about the expression of profound emotions, pain, heartache and nostalgia. Not having a place, a homeland, has always been a major source of inspiration for different forms of art, and it certainly has a big part in this one. (..more)
