Fashion’s next big things at Lichting 2013

Jul 18, 2013 |  by  |  Event, Fashion

Every year the Summer edition of Fashion Week ends with Lichting, a competition that wants to give the most promising graduates of the different art schools in The Netherlands the chance to present themselves to the industry. By many fashion week attendees it's considered one of the highlights and the competition has accelerated the careers of many young designers, such as Maarten van der Horst, who now served as a member of the jury. A clear signature and statement pieces at Winde Rienstra

While I was thinking about Winde Rienstra’s show of last winter there was one thing that popped into my mind: the models were wearing amazingly high and hand-crafted heels. Well, this season Rienstra showed us that she’s still all about the details, including higher and more spectacular heels. (..more)

Handpicked second-hand fashion at TOPSHIT

Handpicked second-hand fashion at TOPSHIT

May 2, 2013 |  by  |  Fashion, Spots

Every now and then I stumble upon a new hotspot at the most unexpected of places. Situated close to Central Station at the touristy Geldersekade, TOPSHIT is exactly such a spot. In a large building temporarily turned into creative hub, owners Fransje Christiaans and Jurjen Johans sell a fine selection of handpicked second-hand and vintage items. This selectivity is what sets the store apart and makes it feel like a stylist's closet rather than a shop. (..more)

Be welcomed and enjoy coffee, food and a good atmosphere at Station Roos

Be welcomed and enjoy coffee, food and a good atmosphere at Station Roos

Station Roos follows a very simple, yet –within Amsterdam– rather unique concept. In a living room-like setting founder Roos serves sandwiches, coffee and home-made pies and ice cream. Besides being tasty, everything is very affordable; I bet there aren't many other places in town that offer espressos for 1 euro, served with a smile. Located at Wibautstraat, the public is rather diverse: students, business people and families easily mingle in this low-key environment. (..more)

Discover divine design at Friday Next

I love interior design, and I like to believe that some day I’ll change my small and overcrowded room for something a little more magazine-worthy. Until then I have to stick to gazing at design blogs or, evenb better, discover stores in Amsterdam for some inspiration. Friday Next certainly is such a place. Located next to Marqt, this spacious concept store sells an interesting mix of items from Dutch designers, as well as Scandinavians or Italians. (..more)

A cabinet of curiosities at ANNA+NINA

Mar 7, 2013 |  by  |  Fashion, Spots

ANNA+NINA imports jewellery from all over the world to sell to (major) stores in The Netherlands. Last month they opened their own store in the heart of De Pijp. Founders Anna and Nina were initially looking for a showroom where potential customers could have a look at their stock. When they came across a great space at Gerard Doustraat they figured that instead of just a showroom, they could also realize their long-treasured dream and open their very own store. The result is a unique place with an assortment so diverse that it's hard to categorize. (..more)

Shirtstories brings sustainable fashion

Shirtstories brings sustainable fashion

Feb 21, 2013 |  by  |  Art, Fashion

I’ve always loved the idea of having my own business, but actually establishing one? Well, I would have no clue where to start. Four brave students, who like me had no experience in running a company did take up the challenge. What started as a school project ended up in something that took over their lives. Fortunately their hard work paid off and a new brand was born: Shirtstories. Today, only five months after first meeting each other, the shirts are in store and the founders are optimistic about what the future may bring. (..more)

Amsterdam Fashion Week Day 4 - Nata Ryzh

Amsterdam Fashion Week Day 4 – Nata Ryzh

Jan 27, 2013 |  by  |  Event, Fashion, Photos

With her show 'Rooted Heart' Nata Ryzh wanted to create a collection that felt organic, finding one's origin by going back to the roots. Ryzh, like Winde Rienstra, was inspired and intrigued by Japan and its mysterious and traditional culture. To build up the tension a loud heartbeat was heard throughout to room, followed by relaxing music that reminded me of a Japanese botanical garden. With hair and make-up as a modern interpretation of the geisha-look, the models showed the mainly loose and flowy clothes. (..more)

Amsterdam Fashion Week Day 4 – Winde Rienstra

Winde Rienstra is known for her architectonic fashion; shape and construction are key in her work. The collection she showed Saturday was no exception. It was, however, a lot darker than her previous work. For the show, titled 'Mourning Cloak', Rienstra was inspired by the Mexican celebration of death and the ancient and mystic world of Samurais and Geishas. She calls her collection a poem for death, but sees the after-life as a new start. (..more)
