Sugarrushin' at Le Caféier

Sugarrushin’ at Le Caféier

Arisen from the Tatziki ashes of Greek restaurant Petros is now a top of the bill lunchroom. On the opposite side of Rozen Theater, you will find LE Cafeier, where possibly some illegal Raki is still hidden under the counter. The owner, Artin Seropian, is an Armenian native, but lived in Sweden for 23 years. The interior design is inspired on Scandinavian wood and stylish back-to-basic accessories. The jugs of water, containing cucumber and lemon are a common Swedish habit in local coffee-houses and his Swedish homemade chocolate coconut balls are worth trying. (..more)

Harvesting at Oogst

Harvesting at Oogst

Once upon a time, a woman walked into the Tweede Tuindwarsstraat when suddenly she spotted a shiny spectacle. As if magic pulled her imaginary strings she was taken down the steps into this picturesque little store called Oogst. Hours, maybe days passed by, and she lost track of time. The most precious pieces were shown and the woman was embellished with lots of silver and gold. So ends this story: she collapsed under the weight of thousands of diamonds, but legend has it that she died with a smile on her face… (..more)

Pleinvrees in 12 pictures

It was a hot night at Club AIR last Saturday. Sweat was dripping from the ceiling and mirrors were misting. Someone even joked about the lack of air; a funny allusion to the name of the club. Pleinvrees is something to keep in mind for me, because the great musical contributions of Arjuna Schiks, Joris Delacroix, David August and many others made the heat very tolerable. (..more)

The truly magnificent Magneet Festival in 12 pictures

I didn't even want to go there. It was only because of the -one time- reunion performance of my true heroes, de Raggende Manne, that I did volunteer for the job. But what a great time I had at Magneet festival. It's worth the damn trip, I can assure you. (..more)

Gay spotting in 12 pictures

I had an overdose of pink this weekend at the Gay Pride. It was hunting season for me and my gay friends in Amsterdam. I brought my gay radar and shot a couple of bears and a lost dyke; even a few gay friendly Dutch celebrities in their natural habitat. (..more)

Film freaks get your freak on at Pluk de Nacht!

Film freaks get your freak on at Pluk de Nacht!

Aug 4, 2011 |  by  |  Art, Event

Tonight is the first film première at Pluk de Nacht festival! I've been there for the five years and have been a huge fan since day 1. Pluk de Nacht was started by a couple of friends who liked to visit cult film festivals, because they wanted to share their enthusiasm for films with other film freaks. They held the first edition in 2003 and have become curators of good cinematic taste. Most of the featured films are not exhibited in Dutch cinemas and every inch of Het Stenen Hoofd will be loaded with people staring at the screen again this year. (..more)

Overflow of rain and music at Costa del Soul in 12 pictures

I’m sure you’re shivering with expectation. This article should have been posted long before; people are already marking their calendars for the next Costa del Soul edition. And even though I was out of town for a week, the site was offline for a couple of days and an overall rain-depression-writer’s-block was bugging me… I —at least— had the pictures ready the day after. Well, enough excuses. You just want to hear/see what happened. Listen with your eyes though, the writer’s block is still obstructing my mind. (..more)

Streetwise raving at Tramme!and in 12 pictures

Where were you last Sunday? Having brunch with your buddy 'Hangover'? You missed out on a 1.) free... 2.) massive... 3.) intimate street rave at Sloterdijk (Ridz already mentioned it last Wednesday). Tramme!and refers to the place where it's held: the new bus depot under the train station (but could also be translated to 'troubles'). This second sunny edition was a buzz, with DJs Isis (greatness, but actually very small in size), True Identity, Dauphin, Roderick Fox and Watt JR. spinning the wheels. (..more)

Suburbia: meet Hotmamahot, the people you got to have at your party

Suburbia: meet Hotmamahot, the people you got to have at your party

Writing about Hotmamahot is like writing about family; I know these people by head and heart. Since last year, they populate the old yellow pump station in Amsterdam-North, where they organize workshops like sushi-making, lead by an Okura chef, bingo for children, but they also assist at numerous other events in Amsterdam. They are underground giants in the Amsterdam party scene and it’s worth knowing something about them. (..more)
