Regenerate yourself with Weenen & Houweling

Falling in love and doing what we love is something we all try to achieve in life. In most situations it’s hard to find either (this is twenty-four years of experience talking). Yet, two people I know have managed to do both at the same time. Since the birth of Overdose, resident photographers Rutger Houweling and Tamar Weenen have contributed to this cultural magazine by publishing electrifying photographs. (..more)

The last few days I have been mentally preparing myself for the ultimate sit-down. On October 16th, PAC festival will take the definition of a lazy Sunday to the next level. From 10.30 in the morning until 23.15 at night you can enjoy five sneak previews of quality films. This will be PAC's fifth edition, which is a collaboration between Pathe and Vara. Due to its previous success, the festival has added five more locations throughout the Netherlands. (..more)

Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember crawling off a dance floor, seating myself in a cozy chair and being flabbergasted by Flash Gordon. Yet another random night at Studio K. Next to throwing these savvy get-togethers Studio K organizes some good cinematography in their comfy little theatres. (..more)

Paper or Pad? The future of media at De Verdieping

My parents still have one, but to my knowledge none of my mates do and I currently do not have the budget to attain one either. At least not on a monthly basis. Newspapers. A ritual that only a few years back was as fixed to most people as a cup of coffee in the morning. Yet times are a changing and so is the necessity of news on paper. Thanks to our good friend the internet and fancy iPads the future of the newspaper is questionable and not as clear as it once used to be. (..more)

Art is fun. It can move people in a good or bad way, but it always has the ability to make people think. Not too long ago I met an artist quite different than your average painter. He’s a man with a boyish smile, a good chat and a lot of love for what he does. Overdose sat down to have a face to face with Frank E Hollywood, a kid who started by tagging walls and ended up exhibiting in the renowned Spiegelstraat. (..more)

I love hotels. Maybe an odd thing to be keen on, but I am. Tales of Hotel Babylon come to mind; guests with weird habits and strange requests plus the sense of adventure that being in a different place than your home gives. I also love fashion and last night these two of my favourites were combined. Overdose.am was invited to the new-found Mint hotel at the Oosterdokskade in Amsterdam. Not to sleep in one of the chic bedrooms or check out their renowned sky lounge, but to attend the fashion show of the infamous Janice. (..more)

You know that flat line you hear when your heartbeat stops? The last few days I have been walking around with this annoying, non-inspiring sound in my head. My creative heart is dead. Obviously it’s the end of the year and I bet a good holiday abroad would activate my creative grey mass again, but for now I am in the grid (yes, from the movie Tron). Luckily, on Wednesday the 22nd of June there might be a cure to my zombie state of mind, because PechaKucha is coming to Trouw. (..more)

Some people dream of doing things, others actually do them. A couple weeks back I met one of Amsterdam’s DO-women. Where most people would see a scruffy, deteriorated, old steak house, she saw potential and a great location. Hidden under the trees opposite to the University of Amsterdam you can find this picturesque place. The name is as simple as its concept: a place to sit and have a good sandwich, coffee or ‘T’. This little treasure provides a large assortment of tea flavours, and offers an excellent high tea arrangement on top of that. For those scone and cake lovers out there this is quite the treat! Go ‘wine tasting for dummies’ at Blue and turn your hobby into a form of art

Wine and I go way back: our relationship started when I was 10 years old. I remember trying to nip my mom’s dry white wine, pulling a sour face and thinking how on earth can you drink something like this for fun? At the age of 15 I adored the super sweet and bubbly tasting wine plus it had to be cheap and cheerful. Liebfraumilch (Wine out of a carton pack) and Canei (wannabe champagne) had both these requirements. Now I know that my infamous hangovers were (next to the quantity) probably caused by the poor quality of these wines. (..more)
