A trip down memory lane with Chino Otsuka
Japan is absolutely fascinating. The Japanese way of life, as I know it, is almost a perfect juxtaposition of a hypermodern technological society versus quite a strict conservative traditional culture and etiquette. Translate this to the work of photographer Chino Otsuka and you are treated to very pure unedited photographs, combined with high-tech layered elements that bring you back to your own personal memories. Snag your personal pair of Locals AMS
It was a sunny weekend in July last year. Daan de Jongh and Mercedita Ramirez were taking a break away from Amsterdam life and made Madrid their city for a few days. During one of their many strolls through back alleys, they happened to bump into a very small orthopaedic shoe store. It was pretty run-down with a broken sign outside and not a great selection of shoes. But there was one model that sprang out; one shoe standing tall above the rest. That shoe was the start of, what some of you might already know, Locals AMS. (..more)
Meneer Malasch is not your average art gallery
Shielding from the rain, we stopped by at a gallery on the corner of Postjesweg and the Witte de Withstraat. I always remembered this place being called Meneer de Wit, but it now goes by the name Meneer Malasch. With the current exhibition The Invention of L.A. Art filling the walls, we were treated to a fantastic lunch catered for by the local butchers and bakers in the area. (..more)
Sharing Signals at Fiber Festival
Maybe you heard something about Fiber Festival last year, or there’s a chance you saw some surreal movies swing by on Facebook. Well, they’re back this Saturday March 24th. The official description is an “audiovisual network festival”. I’d much rather list it as a mind-blowing super-natural technology convention, where all the cool geeks explore the true capabilities of electronic equipment, leaving me dumbfounded trying to work my iPhone camera to document this pure awesomeness. Twirling forks and splashing red wine at Spaghetteria
Have you heard the news? The rustle and bustle about this new Italian joint; real pasta, real people. It’s so simple, yet so good. About four times a week they make their own pasta and combine that with three signature dishes and three ever-changing creations. Either grab yourself a seat along the window or join the gathering at the gimungous kitchen table occupying half the floor. (..more)
Back to basics at Basis
I step foot into Basis, tucked away under the gallery of the old ABN-Amro building on the Vijzelstraat. Co-owner Jan Schaberg is helping out some tourists on where they can find a good hip-hop party on a Thursday night. There’s a good crowd filling the raw space and a nice international mix of cultures and sub-cultures. Since late December last year, Basis has had its doors open, welcoming everyone in. (..more)
Grab yourself a slice of Cottoncake
My first impression of Cottoncake is that I’ve walked into an exclusive, but laid back women’s boutique. I’m not far off, but the vibe is much warmer and the coffee so much better than what you’ve got in mind right now. The dream of two young girls has become a reality here. “We’ve fallen in love with absolutely all of it and we just hope that every visitor does the same,” co-owner Jorinde explains with the biggest smile on her face. Breakfast in Bed #1: Isis van der Wel
Have you ever wondered what someone else’s house looks like on the inside? Have you ever been insanely curious to find out what’s inside your idol’s fridge? With Breakfast in Bed we take a step behind closed doors with the inspiring people Amsterdam has on offer. A monthly item where we get to take a look behind the scenes. We join these people in their morning rituals and show you a slightly more personal side of life. We talk about their vision, their passion and the place they call home. (..more)
