A sit down with designer Leonie Smelt

A sit down with designer Leonie Smelt

Feb 2, 2012 |  by  |  Fashion

Fashion Week ended last week but that doesn’t mean fashion in Amsterdam stops. On the contrary, this Tuesday evening Leonie Smelt presented her first independent collection, Perfect Darkness, on the top floor of De Waag. The vibe was cosy and intimate unlike Fashion Week’s intense atmosphere. Smelt’s work consists mainly out of black and metallic bronze with a lot of rectangular shapes and forms. (..more)

Dennis Diem and Said Mahrouf were worthy of closing Fashion Week

Dennis Diem and Said Mahrouf were worthy of closing Fashion Week

Jan 30, 2012 |  by  |  Fashion

Today, at the grand finale of Amsterdam Fashion Week, one of my evil wishes came true; I saw a model fall on the runway. But then again, her heels were one of the highest and coolest I’ve ever seen, so besides malicious pleasure I felt sorry for her as well. The closing show of Fashion Week was presented by LM Flower Fashion and showed the collections of Said Mahrouf and Dennis Diem. Mahrouf’s collection was simple, elegant, classy, and flowing whereas Diem’s collection was edgy, dark, daring, and with killer heels. (..more)

Discover a world of art, design, and fashion at winterSALON/

Discover a world of art, design, and fashion at winterSALON/

Jan 23, 2012 |  by  |  Art, Event, Fashion

There’s a thin line between art, design, and fashion. Take the obvious example of Alexander McQueen, I honestly don’t know whether to look at his work as fashion or art. SALON/ is an organization and platform that inspires discussion and dialogue between this thin line. SALON/ does this by creating various events through Amsterdam where you can experience the creative works of big and small artists and designers. By taking these out of their usual contexts SALON/ produces a dynamic, interactive and social experience with an intimate vibe. (..more)

Meet and Eat: Discover a vintage and cupcake heaven at The Darling

Meet and Eat: Discover a vintage and cupcake heaven at The Darling

Jan 13, 2012 |  by  |  Fashion, Food, Spots

In the 9 Straatjes many hidden treasures are to be found. If you know where to look, that is. The Darling is one of these precious secrets: a store where you can shop for clothes on the first floor and eat sweet delights in the adorable second floor cupcake café. A better combination than vintage and cupcakes? I can’t think of it. This store makes you feel as if you’re a child in a candy store, and we all should feel like this a bit more often if you ask me. Travel back in time to the early 20th century at I Love Vintage

Travel back in time to the early 20th century at I Love Vintage

Dec 29, 2011 |  by  |  Fashion, Spots

I know I Love Vintage, and if you're anything like me, you probably love vintage as well. It seems as if everybody loves vintage these days, and with valid reasons. Vintage makes you feel as if you’re wearing something real and exclusive. In comparison to seeing six other girls wearing the same skirt made in a mass-production, this feels like a relieve, and a privilege. This exclusivity can be found and bought at I Love Vintage, a charismatic boutique and atelier combined at the Prinsengracht. (..more)

Fulfil all your analogue dreams at the Lomography Gallery Store

Dec 23, 2011 |  by  |  Art, Spots

I adore photography, however I am no photographer (apart from my amateur holiday snap shots). What I do know is that analogue photography is incredibly popular right now, especially lomography. This September a Lomography Gallery Store was opened in our famous 9 Straatjes. The Lomography Gallery Stores are located all over the world, including Berlin, London, Paris, New-York, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Beijing so it was about time Amsterdam got one as well! (..more)

Experience Spuiten en Slikken in theatre

Experience Spuiten en Slikken in theatre

Dec 12, 2011 |  by  |  Art, Event

Who doesn’t know Spuiten en Slikken, the tv-show about sex and drugs on BNN? This winter, Spuiten en Slikken will have their own theatre show, and it will be one hell of a ‘trip’. Every actor will embody a type of drug: DMT, XTC, coke, truffles, GHB and an anonymous drug. All drugs of choice. Rumour has it that when you enter the show a mysterious pill is offered to you, whether you take it, is up to you. Who said theatre’s boring? (..more)

Guest of Honour: James Blake about our drug policy and other things in Amsterdam

Guest of Honour: James Blake about our drug policy and other things in Amsterdam

Last Tuesday James Blake had a gig in Paradiso. Indeed, the man of the daring, minimalistic, slow, hypnotising music with carefully placed silences and a bass that makes your whole body vibrate, with that touching voice that makes you shiver. I’ve had a (maybe not so) secret crush on him ever since I heard his voice in Limit To Your Love, so when I had the chance to unexpectedly interview him, my heart skipped a beat. (..more)

Movember is the moustache party month

Movember is the moustache party month

Nov 17, 2011 |  by  |  Event, Music

Moustache-related concepts seem to pop up everywhere at a frequent rate. A Where Is The Snor party in Club Up, multiple moustache raves and names such as Snackbar Het Snorretje are just a few examples. I’m starting to like this trend! November has a different moustache related concept though. Every year men all over the world stop shaving their moustache for a month. This November is packed with parties and events in the theme of Movember, thus moustaches. (..more)
