Treat yourself to some good old Shakespeare by Toneelgroep Amsterdam
I love theatre. It feels like a movie being performed live before your eyes. Unfortunately there are a lot of crappy plays in town which makes it a little difficult sometimes to find one that’s actually worth your while. When you go to a play from Toneelgroep Amsterdam however, I can guarantee you’ll see the good stuff. This anniversary season Toneelgroep Amsterdam brings us four Shakespeares that were a great success in the past. Local Rockstars: Shinedoe about how she went from dancing to producing
She has her own label together with 2000 And One called Intacto Records, produced great remixes of awesome artists such as Booka Shade and The Knife, and is playing at Groene Helden this Friday in Studio 80. Fall in love at the dreamy impressionists at the Hermitage
Usually I’m more into contemporary art, especially the provoking kind. However, I wouldn’t hang a Helmut Newton in my living room. What I do have shining above my couch is a Monet painting. I absolutely adore the dreaminess and pastel colours of impressionists paintings. In an exhibition in the Hermitage a lot of classics are currently being showed. Since I got a weak spot for the Hermitage because I just got back from Saint Petersburg, this combination of venue and genre is kind of perfect for me. (..more)
Local Rockstars: Henzel & Disco Nova make electro and techno meet
Electro meets techno. That’s what Henzel & Disco Nova are all about. They’re known from Vage Gasten and provide you with the best new electro on 22tracks. When this duo is playing at a party I’m about to attend, I know I’m in for some serious sweating. Their music will make you go hard and make it impossible to leave the dance floor. They have their own party called Rara Aves in the Melkweg, and the next edition is coming up on the 22nd of June. (..more)
Local Rockstars: De Man Zonder Schaduw started raving aged eleven
He rocked my socks off last Sunday at the party of the year, De Zon. This Friday he’s playing at Studio 80. This DJ, with that mysterious name, is literally everywhere. If there is a good techno or house party, chances are big that De Man Zonder Schaduw is playing. The Man With No Shadow is also known for the notorious GZG parties. This summer GZG Zomer Park will take place once again. Dancing to a fresh line-up, in a pentagon-shaped arena with multiple floors creating that feeling of unity. An absolute must go! (..more)
A night in urban tropics at Nachtsalon Tropenmuseum
It seems like yesterday I was drinking beers while looking at bags. This next edition of the Nachtsalon isn’t in the museum of bags, but in the amazing Tropenmuseum. N8 connects Amsterdam youngsters to art and museums. And what is a better way to do this than through an amazing program filled with art, music, comedy, film, debate, performance, tours, theatre, lectures, workshops and crazy fun? Local Rockstars: Sweaty and funky Orgaanklap
Once upon a time, I was peacefully drinking cheap beer at a metal-head café in the Spuistraat (don’t ask me why), when suddenly I ran into an acquaintance who started to heavily French kiss my nose. He then drunkenly apologized by saying ‘I’m so sorry. It’s just that… You’re the closest thing I got to my girlfriend right now.’ This was Tom, boyfriend of one of my best friends who happened to be on holiday at that time, and singer of the band Orgaanklap. Breakfast until 18:00 at 331 West
It’s five o’clock in the afternoon and you’re cycling through our gorgeous city. Other cyclists are probably coming home from work. You on the other hand have been going hard all night and day at a big ass rave party somewhere in the outer suburbs, probably in an empty industrial building or underneath a bridge. At this moment you’re desperately craving for some nice breakfast. However all the cafés you come across are serving lunch or have even started serving dinner at this time. Everyone must recognize this horrible situation. Luckily we have 331 West, serving breakfast until 18:00! (..more)
Make and buy art for charity at 1000 drawings
Drawing something on an A5 sized paper and then buying someone else’s creation for only €10. And this all for a good cause?! Welcome to 1000 Drawings, on May 11th. This is truly one of the most fun initiatives I’ve come across in a long time. I love looking and talking about art but my attempts of creating masterpieces always fail miserably, which made me give up on being an artist a long time ago. I decided to stick to written word instead. However, even I want to run to the nearest supply store to buy A5 paper and go crazy! (..more)
Night club and art meet at the Contemporary Art Club
As some of you might know, I love dancing to (electronic) music and I love looking and talking about art. Trouw/De Verieping and the Stedelijk Museum combined these activities by creating four interactive events. These events dare you to look at contemporary art in a new way. Trouw will be filled with art, multimedia-installations, lectures, interviews, and music that is Trouw-worthy. The first Contemporary Art Club is up next Thursday. (..more)
