Go see M.I.A.’s mash-up of dance, hip-hop, world music, pop and politics

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, better known by her stage name M.I.A., is not your everyday musician. Her music doesn't care about genre borders, or any other borders for that matter. She bounces from hip-hop to electronic beats and mixes in the cultures of home town London and home country Sri Lanka. You might know her from the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire, or you might just know your music. Either way, Maya is coming to Amsterdam for a gig on November 25th, and this is one of those artists that brings something extra to the table. (..more)

Live music is good for the soul; upcoming indie gigs in Amsterdam

I probably listen to more music than is good for me. You could even call it a bit of an addiction; always running around with those headphones. Luckily, Amsterdam has a few quality concert stages that allow me to get my live music fix on a regular basis. I compiled a small list of some the upcoming gigs that I really want to see, and I can advise you all to go check out these bands. They're all upcoming, fresh and going to awesome live. See you There! (..more)

Support your local rock stars: Kensington

Support your local rock stars: Kensington

Nowadays, Dutch pop and rock music charts are mostly dominated by American and British artists. Local talent doesn't get much support and the big record companies splash all their budgets on the marketing of the extremely teen-friendly and mainstream Idols/X-factor/other-random-stupid talent-show winners; only for them to all fade away as soon as the next TV-season starts. Is there no talent then? Check out the video of Kensington's first single, and decide for yourself. I would pick this kind of music over one of Gordon's toy projects, any day of the week! (..more)

Last year I just wandered to the Pluk de Nacht film festival area when the weather, my mood and my agenda came together by chance. This worked to a certain degree.. I saw a few awesome films, but also sat out a really odd and very long Icelandic mafia film. If I then think back to all the people lounging in the very nice but also scarce beach chairs too, I know I have to plan better and come earlier this year. (..more)

Hip-Hop in the sun with Appelsap and rum

Once a year, the music stage of the Oosterpark in Amsterdam is turned into Appelsap, a Mecca for hip-hop fans and friends. This one-day outdoor music festival has an awesome vibe and I plan on soaking up the sun, the musical mix of hip-hop, soul, funk and house and appelsap/rum mix drinks. Almost everyone who is someone in the Dutch hip-hop scene is in some way involved in this party, so I'm expecting loads off good stuff. Next Sunday on August 1st, be there! (..more)

Die Antwoord brings the dirty raw side of South Africa to Amsterdam

Die Antwoord brings the dirty raw side of South Africa to Amsterdam

You are probably, like me, recovering from a massive hangover following Holland's epic win over Brazil yesterday. Watching South Africa hosting this well orchestrated World Cup makes us all feel very fuzzy and happy inside doesn't it? Bright colours, dancing locals and traditional vuvuzela enthusiasm! Happiness! Well that image is (..more)
