Live music is good for the soul: more indie gigs in Amsterdam
A while ago I wrote a round-up of upcoming concerts in the so-called 'indie' genre I wanted to go to. Since this was well received and all the gigs I listed have now either passed or sold out (except for Foals, you guys don't know what your missing), I've made a follow up. Listening to these bands is as enjoyable as watching Katy Perry videos with mute turned on, so get in on the action and go for the live experience! (..more)

Sometimes an event just knows how to sell itself: "A mind blowing festival will take place at Tuschinksi Amsterdam: Night of the AdEaters 2010. We’re talking impact survival, party style for hardcore creatives. Starring 360 outstanding, hilarious, fascinating and sometimes even heartbreaking commercials coming at you on a cinema screen." If that didn't tick off all my curiosity boxes already, the rest of the event sure did: films like Control by Anton Corbijn and Johan Primero by Johan Kramer, good music, comedy, cocktails and bingo(??). My tip for London Calling: Tame Impala & Wavves
Any Amsterdam local who likes 'indie' pop and rock music already knows the bi-annual festival London Calling, so I won't bore you all with a long introduction. The festival which once upon a time brought bands like Blur, Bloc Party and The Libertines to Amsterdam before they made it big, is back on 12+13 November. Just have a look at their track record and see for yourself that the programmers are in touch with all the trends. Passe-partouts are sold-out already but there are still day tickets. My advice? Go for day two with psychedelic rockers Tame Impala and lo-fi noise-rocker Wavves among others. (..more)
Cee-Lo Green says “Fuck You” Paradiso
Cee-Lo Green, the inimitable voice behind Gnarls Barkley, has recently been everywhere with his solo single 'Fuck You'. I can't turn on a radio or television without hearing him cuss at me. Not that I need those reminders, as the catchy song won't get out of my head anyway. Cee-Lo's story is an interesting one. Early in his career he was part of hip-hop group Goodie Mob, a background singer on TLC's Waterfalls and the songwriter of Don't Cha by The Pussycat Dolls. Later, as half of Gnarls Barkley, he was first to top the British single charts with purely downloads. (..more)
Perfect September sundays with a ‘quality’ film marathon by PAC
PAC, or Pathé Alternative Cinema, is an initiative to show more 'quality' films. So not your average Hollywood blockbusters, but films with more depth and good stories that actually stay with you. Now don't get me wrong, I love a bad and cheesy film on a lazy Sunday, but some 'quality' films are just pieces of art. On September 12th Tuschinski is hosting the PAC Festival, showing 5 films that were highly rated at international film festivals. (..more)
Band of Horses bring the sound of South Carolina to Amsterdam
South Carolina based indie rock band Band of Horses, who recently played at Lowlands festival, are coming back to Amsterdam for a show in Paradiso. The sound of their 2010 album Infinite Arms, indie rock with southern United States influences, is very soothing and has been a big part of my soundtrack of the summer of 2010. It's the kind of music you listen to while driving to Berlin without stops, or when drinking red wine by a camp-fire with good friends. So, everyone who knows how to enjoy music by emotional bearded men with cowboy hats, be there! (..more)
Baiser sur la disco a Oost/Kust #2
A while ago, I wrote about the first edition of Oost/Kust, a new disco/house/techno party with a fresh line-up and a backdrop of vintage visual and classy snacks. For their upcoming second edition, Oost/Kust have brought in some new DJs to keep the funk alive. All the way from Enschede comes 'De Man Tussen De Jassen', and from right here in Amsterdam, the genius behind disco banger Baiser Sur La Disco, Rubix. Together with the resident DJ's this promises to be good. People of Amsterdam, get your dance on! (..more)
