Mixtape Monday: Analog Vibes by Het Meisje

It was her older brother who introduced Barbara (Het Meisje) to vinyl when she was 13 years old. At age 16 Barbara got captivated by Amsterdam’s night-life and with it she discovered minimal and techno. She loved its dark tones and raw beats, already played by her heroes Max Cooper, Kollektiv Turmstrasse and Extrawelt. It was her performance two years later at a ZeeZout after party, that gave her a big head start as a DJ, eventually resulting in a position as ZeeZout resident. Currently she’s focused on producing her own sounds; music with a feeling. (..more)

Mixtape Monday: Former Sketches by Shadee

Mar 11, 2013 |  by  |  Music

Shadee started his musical adventure playing a spectrum of classic sounds, pulled from hip-hop and downtempo, to house and disco. Over time his passion for the ’90s house sound grew, which pushed him closer towards electronic music. Despite this, his style has never neglected the undertones of his musical roots. In 2009, Shadee became involved as a resident with Aspirations, a concept with a focus on high-quality, intimate house & deephouse nights throughout Amsterdam. Aspirations has achieved critical acclaim for consistently booking international upcoming talent such as Moomin, Smallpeople and Oskar Offerman. (..more)

Paradiso is bringing Sugar Man Sixto Rodriguez to Amsterdam

Mar 5, 2013 |  by  |  Event, Music

Sixto Rodriguez, the star of the best documentary Oscar winning Searching For Sugar Man, is coming to Amsterdam. Paradiso were the first ones to smartly jump onto the recent hype around the ’70s folk singer. The documentary depicts how the Detroit singer’s two unsuccessful albums make it big years later in South Africa (where he is wrongly presumed dead) without him knowing anything about it. Loyal fans from South Africa track him down and find a humble, poor man working in construction who left all his musical ambitions behind long ago. (..more)

Mixtape Monday: My Easter Egg Addiction by Brand!

Mixtape Monday: My Easter Egg Addiction by Brand!

Feb 25, 2013 |  by  |  Music

“WHAT is Brand!?” This question seems to arise more and more often as the demand for deeper bass-sounds soares. The most sensible thing to ask would actually be: “WHO is Brand!?”. Although this question is, yet again, unanswerable since Brand! is partly machine. Still, as with all roots and routes, nothing comes from nowhere. Growing up as a kid in a designer family, Brand! realised at an early stage that he didn’t need to adapt to his environment. Instead, his environment could adapt to him. The result? Press play. Mixtape Monday: Colourful Storytelling by Mees Dierdorp

Feb 18, 2013 |  by  |  Music

Early in his life Mees Dierdorp wondered how sound could influence the human body. While scratching with his grandmother’s record player, he communicated with the birds on the roof. Something had to be made, that much was clear. In this week’s Mixtape Monday he takes you on a genre-transcending journey through recent releases, unreleased work and colourful artists. While his poetic sound knows no boundaries, it can make you swing, feel or think at any moment. Let these tamed raw sounds take you to places with undiscovered senses.. (..more)

Amy Winehouse is alive

Amy Winehouse is alive

Feb 12, 2013 |  by  |  Art, Event

Amy is back. For one night. Tomorrow. Back in 2006 on a stormy December night, Amy Winehouse flew to the remote, south-western corner of Ireland to perform for Other Voices, an acclaimed Irish TV music series filmed in Dingle every winter. Amy took to the stage of Saint James’s church, capacity 85, and wowed the small, packed crowd with a searing, acoustic set of songs from Back to Black. After leaving the stage, a relaxed and happy Amy spoke about her music and influences – Mahalia Jackson, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles and the Shangri-Las to name a few. (..more)

Mixtape Monday: Eu Sunt Mahmur by De Sluwe Vos

Feb 11, 2013 |  by  |  Music

Agressive kicks, resonating strings and hi-hats that cut through your eardrums. These are the characteristics of the sound produced by De Sluwe Vos. The best way to describe his DJing style is by calling it highly energetic; he leaves the club as a happy man when he is more dead than alive. Consequently he likes to take his audience along with him in that state. This got him to places like Sziget Festival, FORMAT and Studio 80 already, and he is about to venture abroad again. Much more to come! (..more)
