Mixtape Monday: Keep it average by Levi Verspeek
Groovy techno or funk with a drive is what you can expect when Levi Verspeek plays his music. This Amsterdam born and raised kid made his first techno track in 2010, Hurken, which was instantly picked up by the likes of techno legend Dave Clarke. He even played it in the best of 2010 edition of his radio show White Noise. In 2011 he became a TWSTd finalist which resulted in a Sugar Factory residency; the future is bright for Levi! (..more)
Mixtape Monday: Everybody was Freakin by Michael Jacques
This week we have the youngest member of the Dekmantel collective in Mixtape Monday: Michael Jacques. His DJ sets vary from house to techno and everything in between, and the successful club night BlackOut he hosts together with Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij has already had artists like Julio Bashmore, Prosumer, Levon Vincent and Kerri Chandler over in its short lifetime. Next up for BlackOut: UK house pioneer Joy Orbison on February 10th. This man knows his music! (..more)
Mixtape Monday: Moodswings by No Reset
New kid on the electronic music block No Reset is definitely not new to music in general. Like every true musician (according to all their biographies at least), he already owned his first guitar as a 14-year old and by the time he was 18 his résumé was packed with punk and pop-rock bands. Fast forward to today and the morgen.am DJ has replaced his six-strings with laptops and mixers, and the future is looking bright! (..more)
It’s time for another round of Flemish and Dutch pop & rock at Sonic Soirée
Sonic Soirée is an intimate mini version of Sonic Connections, the pop & rock festival that hosts each Spring. It's a great chance to discover new Flemish and Dutch bands before they break through to mass fame. This edition features Belgians Pebbles and the Riverman –an exceptionally successful combination of raw soul, Spanish duende and references to poetic texts–, their fellow countrymen and electro-poppers Teddiedrum, and the darker, more melancholic Dutch folk singer Leendert. Mixtape Monday: Welcome to 2012 by Prunk
According to my inside sources, this week's Mixtape Monday chef is not only good in the musical kitchen but also a star in the culinary one. Our guest is Prunk, a name that keeps popping up in house oriented line-ups around the Dam. Rumour has it he owned his first vinyl record at age eleven and that he already started producing at the tender age of sixteen. Prunk's musical style has been going in a lot of different directions in recent years, but he has now settled on a sound that he wants to present with this mix. Enjoy! (..more)
Mixtape Monday: Worst Monday of the year by Jorn Liefdeshuis
DJ sets by Jorn Liefdeshuis are a mixed bag. In terms of musical styles, that is. He’s all for breaking down barriers, so he spins R&B next to techno and mixes dubstep with house. In 2005, the now 25 year-old DJ started his Pixel concept at the fabled club 11 that closed its doors in 2008. Jorn continued to advertise his gospel of ‘romantic club music’ via his Bar Weinig (punning in Dutch: Hardly Anything) nights, Off Centre festival and since January 2011 the monthly Closer nights at Melkweg. As the holiday season comes closer and winter creeps into town we find ourself in need of a good soundtrack for these dark and cold days. Of course we always aim to please our dear readers here at Overdose.am, so we have something ready for you: Mirella Kroes’ December Mix. The DJ known for her taste for the deeper side of house and techno put together a genre-defying set filled with just songs she loves. Turn the heater up to 25°C, crawl back between the sheets and press PLAY! (..more)
Local Rockstars: Join Boris Werner and William Kouam Djoko’s Late Night Society
I met up with Trouw residents and local heroes Boris Werner and William Kouam Djoko for a short interview recently. The two men host their own night in Amsterdam's most illustrious night club and are on a mission to get everyone to dress up chic, and act like trash. I spoke with them about music, creating an experience, and how Late Night Society propelled three DJs into the top five of Resident Advisor's DJ top 100. (..more)
Mixtape Monday: From hangover to hangover by John Wolff
John Wolff describes himself as the guy that always has to control the music at his friends’ parties. That could’ve made him very annoying, but luckily he knows what he is doing. After collecting music for many years John’s career as a DJ kicked off with a gig at Shoeless Open Air in 2010, after which many more followed, including this year’s Mystery Land. Happy Monday! Mixtape Monday: Conciousdreams by Ferdinand
People who frequent off the grid raves in warehouses and other obscure places in Amsterdam have probably experienced one of Ferdinand’s sets already. He’s been a regular on the line-up of many raves around town, and if he wasn’t the one behind the decks he was probably the guy going crazy next to you on the dance floor. He closed off the morgen.am area with his deep techno tunes at our last own event: Midnight Wonderland. (..more)
