About the author
Being driven by music from a young age made me realize how lucky I am to be situated in Amsterdam and its ever growing scene of artists, events and, of course, music enthusiasts. With a focus on the feel of House, Techno and all in between, sharing my love for music in any way possible acts as a fine expressive outlet.

This week’s agenda comes with a special pick by Maurice, a familiar face of the series who’ll tell you what this Friday and Saturday are all about.

Friday & Saturday: Super Sonic Jazz @ Paradiso

Back in 1956, the spiritual jazz artist Sun Ra (and his Arkestra) recorded one of their first albums: ’Super Sonic Jazz’. In 1970 the band descended from their spaceships down to Paradiso and mesmerized the jazz cats from Amsterdam with their super sonic jazz. Now, nearly 50 years later, Sun Ra’s spirit can still be felt inside Paradiso during the Super Sonic Jazz Festival. Concerts and club nights with exciting and innovative artists who will explore the vast universe of jazz music and all genres that use jazz as inspiration. Friday and Saturday offer various concerts from D-Train, Makaya McGraven.

Contemporary jazz-funk act Ghost-note & Mononeon is definitely one of the highlights. The band is building on the uplifting, pioneering foundations laid out by the greats and provide their fresh take with tastes of afrobeat, hip-hop, psychedelia and more. Just look and listen to their furiously fast-paced funk below.

Obviously they’ll leave you too hyped to go home. Luckily DJs Mendel, Alexander Nut, KC the Funkaholic, Tenzers and more got you covered during the afterparty. One by one sublime selectors who’ll elaborate on the sounds heard earlier.

With Yussef Dayes and Alfamist repping London’s vibrant jazz scene and Shigeto’s and Dorian Concept’s forward thinking music, Paradiso couldn’t have encapsulated today’s super sonic jazz any better. Peep all the concerts and club nights here.

Saturday: PIV with Apollonia @ Shelter

Saturday will also see the prolific trio of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky visit town as Chris Stussy and Prunk got their hands on them as Apollonia and invited them for a night with PIV in Shelter.

Individually, the three can be seen as some of the main kickstarters of the stripped back house sound of France we’re so fond of these days since the longtime friends crossed paths musically years ago and contributed to Ghenacia’s label ‘Freak n’ Chic’ multiple times until 2012. This was the year the three initiated both their successful record label and the DJ collective we know now as Apollonia. With the three playing everywhere you could possibly imagine it was right about time they made their Shelter debut. Next to the aforementioned PIV founders there’s a timeslot for VBX affiliated Makcim as well.
