For almost 15 years, Wicked Jazz Sounds has been a household name in Amsterdam’s nightlife. The organization emulates eclecticism, with soulful music that’s not that easy to define, as virtually every genre within the spectrum is covered: hip-hop, house, Brazilian, afro, jazz & funk, just to name a few. The team is a diverse collection of artists and DJs who above all share a passion for music, with affiliates playing frequently on Red Light Radio, an annual Wicked Jazz Sounds festival and a weekly club event.
Waxing things up
Now they want to take it to the next level, by converting the shared passion for music into the passion of sharing music. Which is why two members of the Wicked crew, Leroy Rey and Lucas Benjamin are realizing their ambition to start a record label, appropriately named Wicked Wax.
An eclectic record label committed to a roster of diverse artists, with the focus of giving them a space to harvest their talents and push boundaries.
With the same ideology as Wicked Jazz Sounds, the eclectic record label will be committed to a roster of diverse artists. The focus will be on giving them a space to harvest their talents and push their boundaries. This opens up new possibilities for the producer whose music is more organically inclined. With a lot of record labels nowadays focusing on electronic music, like (deep) house and techno, this seems like a gap which Wicked Wax could fill perfectly. In that sense it;s not only a logical next step for the Wicked Jazz Sounds crew, it is also what the local music scene is missing.
Wish Wicked Wax a warm welcome
Starting a record label isn’t a mundane task and requires, besides blood sweat and a tear, some capital. Which is why Leroy and Lucas need your help in realizing their goal. They’ve started a crowdfunding campaign to kickstart their platform. By donating you’ll not only become a contributor to the dope initiative, but depending on the amount you can get the first releases of Wicked Wax, including the Hypothesis EP from the Wicked Jazz Connection. Check out the first track ‘Hurricane’ below and get a feel of what Wicked Wax has in store for y’all.
