About the author
Having lived in London to study theater producing, Senne now selects the tastiest performances across Amsterdam and serves up the fine theatrical dishes this city has to offer.

The beginning of September marks the end of the relatively theater-dry months of July and August – difficult weeks for those who require regular shots of big-budget live entertainment to stay alive. The Dutch Theater Festival combines an anthology of last season, with many of the most acclaimed shows reprising, award ceremonies for the finest thespian achievements and a platform for discussion about the current state of the art form and its potential.

Award-winning theater

The jury has selected eleven favourites, amongst them They Are Just Kids by Oostpool and Kings of War, Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Nominees for the Theo d’Or include Maria Kraakman (Het Jaar van de Kreeft) and Chris Nietvelt (Glazen Speelgoed); the Louis d’Or might go to Hans Kesting (Kings of War) or Gijs Scholten van Aschat (Het Jaar van de Kreeft). Another nominee is De Revisor:

Portraits of last year’s winners, Marieke Heebink and Ramsey Nasr, will be unveiled and included in the collection at the Stadsschouwburg, as is tradition. Other program highlights include the Nikon Theater Photography Prize, putting the pictures in the spotlight that accompany productions and are invaluable in selling a show by communicating the right atmosphere in still imagery.

Several shows will be ‘language no problem’, meaning either in English or not containing any words.

The Nederlands Theater Festival runs from September 1 till 11 on different locations throughout the city. For more information and tickets, visit their website.
