New name, same concept. Too many plans for the weekend? Let me narrow your options down by weekly suggesting the events where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s where you weekend warriors should go to make it worth your damn hangover.
Wednesday: Tania Maria @ North Sea Jazz Club
Bossa nova, samba, Latin jazz and more. Ah yes, music from Brazil always scratches that sweet sonic itch for me. Tonight these genres will come together at North Sea Jazz Club, where the Summer Sessions star Tania Maria. She’ll be laying down some jazzy keys and perform songs out of a large repertoire with her band. If you listen and close your eyes, you could swear that you’re somewhere in Bahia or Ipanema, under the sun with a coconut in your hand. If you wanna take this flight with her (who wouldn’t?) then score some tickets here.
Thursday: Smaakversterkers @ Sugarfactory
Last week I mentioned Kremlin Disko as one of Amsterdam’s finest young disco DJs. This week he has his own all-nighter in the Sugarfactory. Besides disco, this guy knows exactly what classics to spin to get the floor filled up. A tropical night with the finest house, disco, live performances, popsicles and free shots – how is that not a great idea?
Friday: Juicy @ Tolhuistuin
Food, drinks and hip-hop; what better way to ring in your weekend? Over at the Tolhuistuin, Juicy fires up the grill, keeps the freshly mixed cocktails cold and provides us with summer tracks like this one. Hopefully some rays of sunlight can be added to these three ingredients, transforming the Tolhuistuin into a real block party.
Saturday: Appelsap Festival + Afterparty
Appelsap is the only hip-hop festival in Amsterdam, housing some of the biggest (international) names in the game. It’s been around for over 15 years and has made a well-established name for itself, creating a culture around the festival ranging from clothing to visual art. The line-up consist of everything from contemporary rappers and DJs and almost the entire Dutch rap game, to old school heavy hitters like Fat Joe and Kenny Dope. It was a surprise to see Kenny on the bill because he’s mostly known for his house productions (with the Masters At Work). But then again it makes sense, since he’s a hip-hop head by heart. Surely Appelsap will be poppin’, as it always has been! You can grab your tickets here.
The afterparty takes place at Paradiso, with Lion Kojo, Appiah, Luc and Mairo Nawaz behind the decks. And off course I have to honor The BasedGod when he’s in town: cult leader and rapper Lil B will perform live on stage at Bass Line. Many praise him, some hate him, but one thing stays true, and that’s that he loves you. It’s so cheesy it even rhymes… #TYBG
