Worth Your Dam Hangover: Funkyard, Buiten Westen, Festifest AAN ZEE

About the author
I’ve been a music hoarder all my life and it was I who coined the phrase: ‘Every genre has something to offer’ (patent pending). My main infatuations are House, Disco, Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop and every subgenre in between. As long as the tunes spark up a euphoric feeling. Writing about Music expresses my passion for the art.

New name, same concept. Too many plans for the weekend? Let me narrow your options down by weekly suggesting the events where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s where you weekend warriors should go to make it worth your damn hangover.

Friday: Funkyard vs. Cheetah @ Cruqiusgilde

As you might now by now, this is the last weekend Cruqiusgilde might deliver your Dam hangover. The closing parties are on Friday and Sunday, but I want to highlight the first night, as the line-up gives me canned heat in my heels. Funkyard vs Cheetah is gonna turn Cruqiusgilde into an old school disco soirée. Junkyard Soundsystem, Cheetah residents Marcel Vogel and Mr Mendel and record dealer Nick The Record as a special guest are providing the necessary amount of boogie tracks. I explicitly use the term boogie here because it represents both disco and funk, as it’s at the midpoint between the two.

Saturday: Buiten Westen @ Ouderkerkerplas

Over the past four years, Buiten Westen has made its name in the Dam’s festival-filled summers, turning the Westerpark inside out with delightful house and techno. But this edition the event is hosted at the Ouderkerkerplas, in my hometown. The location alone gives you enough reasons to come over, with beautiful green grass and a lake which they allow us to swim in! Besides that, I personally look forward to finally seeing Jeremy Underground for the first time; his musical taste and dedication to both music and his sets is really inspiring. From digging deep for underground cuts to putting the New Jersey and the east coast sound back on the map (read: my hometown), I think house needed a guy like Jeremy.

Saturday: De Zomernacht @ De School

De School is presenting De Zomernacht every Saturday in July and August. De Zomernacht series doesn’t have a fixed program, but rather announces the line-up at the last minute. This adds a surprise effect to the Amsterdam night scene, which is uncommon. It could be seen as a gutsy move, but it isn’t expected otherwise from De School. So I can’t really tell you what DJs’ music will be performing this Saturday, I guess you’ll have to find out for yourself.

Sunday: Festifest AAN ZEE @ Woodstock

Festifest is taking an excursion outside the city this Sunday. Over at Woodstock Bloemendaal they’ll host their first party on the beach. Space Dimension Controller, Discodromo and SHMLSS are faced towards the crowd behind the decks, between your toes you’ll find some sand and apparently Festifest’s prayer to the Sun Gods is turning the weather in their favor, creating a sexy, space disco and sun-laced day on the beach.
