As part of their 50th anniversary season, the Dutch National Opera has come up with a brand new festival, set to profile innovative, contemporary takes on opera. The first-ever Opera Forward Festival (OFF) runs from March 15 to 25 this year and is full of inventive programming (more on that later), but if you want a taste of what the festival is planning for the weeks ahead, you’ll want to head to De School this Sunday afternoon.
A preview to the Opera Forward Festival
In collaboration with the OFF and We Are Public, the school-turned-nightclub is hosting an exclusive preview event, featuring artists culled from the festival program. Guests will hear live performances of arias from OFF production Il Matrimonio Segreto, an 18th-century comic opera by Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa about the chaos and intrigue surrounding a secret marriage. The preview will also feature interviews with composer Thannasis Deligianis and the cast of the world premiere of Only the Sound Remains, which OFF will present at the National Opera from March 15 to 24. Also on the docket are a performance of Deligianis’ new work for guitar and percussion and a keynote speech by theater music maker Gable Roelofsen.
For those curious about what this brand-new festival has to offer, De School promises a glimpse of what a day of talks, interviews and music at OFF might look like. Also, like many of the daytime events at OFF, De School’s preview won’t cost you a cent. Just send an email to off@wearepublic.nl to RSVP, and head to De School on Sunday for a taste of what the future of opera has in store.
