Philip Glass is, you might not see this coming because I write about electronic music most of the time, one of my favourite artists. I listen to his music a lot, especially on moments I have to focus because I have to write an essay for example. The minimalistic simplicity of his music is beautiful — although he has composed other stuff as well. He also happens to be one of the most influential composers of the last fifty years. On the 11th of May he’ll be in Amsterdam and has something very special planned. I can’t wait.
Exchange project for young musicians
Not just Philip will be performing. He’ll be accompanied by a group of very talented musicians such as Tim Fain, Matt Haimovitz, Mike Garry and many more. If I’m completely honest with you I don’t know these names that well, but if they’re somehow connected with mister Glass I’m positive they’ll be great. All these musicians are part of an exchange programme and art centre Philip set up in California. This’ll be a charity concert for this project.
This Saturday an open rehersal with a limited number of seats will take place at the 5&33 gallery at the art’otel. The concert itself is more like a festival actually. In the afternoon a film by Godfrey Reggio called Visitors will be shown which also features Philip his music. After this the audience is allowed to ask the director and composer questions.
Robert Malasch is taking care of the edition in our town. The same event will take place in Berlin, London and Paris as well. Robert is still looking for volunteers specialised in various disciplines who are interested in helping out. If you’re interested you can send an e-mail to rmalasch@gmail.com.
