Too many plans for the weekend? Let me narrow down your options by suggesting some events where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. Here’s where you weekend warriors should go to for next Monday’s hangover.
Thursday: Laurent Garnier @ Trouw
“By the time I was ten years old my bedroom looked like a nightclub. There were strobes, multi-coloured flashing lights, a disco ball, a DJ booth and a dance floor. When I switched on my equipment hundreds of tiny white lights would flit across my bedroom ceiling and walls. I switched on my disco ball every night. I only dreamt of one thing: making people dance.” Innocent statement by such a worldwide legend of the underground house and techno music scene. Take a day off tomorrow, go check this guy out tonight at Trouw, supported by residents Nuno dos Santos and Tsepo.
Friday: Horizon @ DOKA
On Friday, it’s time for the latest edition of Horizon in DOKA. Nevertheless, Horizon has found a new home base; the MC Theater. All the more reason to go out with a bang this weekend. Featuring the uncrowned king of the British underground, Trevor Jackson, also known by his alias Playgroup. It has been a while since he has played in the Netherlands. Also on the bill, Drei Fragezeichen, a debut show for this DJ collective in our city. It’s a collaboration consisting of Panoramabar’s nd_baumecker and Live At Robert Johnson’s Massimiliano Pagliara. Need I say more? Yes, resident Reza Athar will be opening. True qualitative music, go support.
Friday: Drukpers x Permanent Vacation @ Trouw
Permanent Vacation is a renowned record label from our neighbours. Drukpers is Job Jobse’s Trouw party. Working together seems like a solid formula. This event features the Tuff City Kids, also known as Gerd Janson & Lauer playing together. Personal favourite Pional live and Job Jobse himself. Downstairs, at De Verdieping, more Permanent Vacation with Lauer live, Lexx and Permanent Vacation’s own DJ team. An invasion of Germans and their fine music all night.
Sunday: Trouw op Zondag @ Trouw
Finally, we close the weekend with none other than Border Community leader James Holden. No introduction needed for this protagonist of complicated music. He’s been doing his own thing for a decade, staying different to what everybody else is doing. Things have gone sky high since the release of his latest album. Glad to see him back in Amsterdam, together with local rock stars Patrice Bäumel and Jorn Liefdeshuis. If you never experienced a night with James, now would be the time to try it out. Enjoy the hangover on Monday Amsterdam.
