So let’s go back to roughly seven months ago when people all around me started talking about ‘flume’. At first I thought they were saying ‘flem’ and wanted to offer each and every one of them a tissue, but it turned out they were talking about 21-year-old Harley Streten otherwise known as –you guessed it– Flume.
The Aussie bloke started making music at the tender age of thirteen when he found a software CD in a box of cereal. I still cherish the Star Wars lightsaber spoon I once found in there but it didn’t help me with a glowing career as Jedi, I can tell you that. Harley however taught himself how to make music and in 2011 entered a contest by Future Classic (an Australian record label that also has the coolest SoundCloud account) by sending in three songs. Needless to say, he won. Since then his world has been upside down, according to Harley himself, and he’s “never drank so much alcohol in his life, but it’s a fun lifestyle.”
Now I tend to jump on the bandwagon a tad late with these things so mister Flume didn’t get my attention until he made a sick remix of ‘You & Me’ by Disclosure which makes me want to dance, have sex and break things simultaneously.
But then I discovered that Streten does not need remixes to produce awesome tunes. Heavily inspired by Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke, but a lot more accessible and danceable, he effortlessly mixes electronic music with hip-hop and what have you. Take this song for instance (my personal favorite):
Doesn’t listening to this just make you want to light a joint, close your eyes and move your feet in any fashion you please?! If so, you’re in luck, because the young producer is coming to Amsterdam on the 30th of November. Be there, or be flem.
