Station Roos follows a very simple, yet –within Amsterdam– rather unique concept. In a living room-like setting founder Roos serves sandwiches, coffee and home-made pies and ice cream. Besides being tasty, everything is very affordable; I bet there aren’t many other places in town that offer espressos for 1 euro, served with a smile. Located at Wibautstraat, the public is rather diverse: students, business people and families easily mingle in this low-key environment.
Simple food, exotic ice cream
Even though Station Roos opened its doors less than a year a go, it already has a vast base of loyal customers. Roos’ apple-rhubarb pie is so good that it makes people want to come back for it. All those returning customers are warmly welcomed by Roos, who is always up for some chitchat. You won’t be presented with extensive menus here –in fact when I visited, Roos wasn’t really sure where the menu was– but you’ll rather find a small assortment of simple sandwiches and delicacies made from good products.
As summer is approaching Roos hopes to sell more and more of her Italian ice cream, with which she likes to experiment. Past flavours included basil, green tea and licorice, and besides the standard flavours she currently has irresistible ‘bokkepootjes’ ice cream on sale. If you’re in a hurry trying to catch your metro, you can also grab a take-out sandwich. Moreover, it’s possible to get a basic dish, like pasta, pizza or some salad, at Station Roos. When you give Roos a heads-up, she’ll definitely be able to serve you some dinner. So, next time you pass Wibautstraat on your way to work or school and feel like trying something different than Bagels & Beans or Coffee Company, make sure to pop by Station Roos!
