Rob is 28 (but needs his beard to actually look like it), loves music, adventures and spontaneous people. His scribblings are about these things too, so if you share his interests, stay tuned!

We already wrote about Amsterdam’s new freedom festival Vrijland at Amsterdam Roest a while ago. But with May approaching fast and their line-up now complete it’s time to take a closer look at this new event. It’s almost sold-out already, so don’t wait too long with buying your ticket to freedom.

Line-up additions

Musically, a few great new names have been added to the bill. Amsterdam’s hottest Saturday night club concept Backstage has also been recruited to host a stage. In other words, great news! The big names we already knew such as Mike Huckaby, Studio Barnhus, Portable and San Proper have been joined by Claro Intelecto, Benny Rodrigues and SHMLSS amongst others on May 5th. The non musical line-up (containing a free market curated by has also been upgraded with Cinema Piccolo, the worlds smallest cinema, the word artists Geheim Schrijvers and author and performer Elfie Tromp.

Zooming in

There’s a few artists I want to ask your attention for. Let’s start with Alan Abrahams AKA Portable, a true citizen of the world born in South Africa, raised in London and settled in Portugal. His formative years were spent in an impoverished Cape Town township ironically tagged “Beverly Hills”, and to the backbeat of the first wave of Chicago house records he emerged out of the ruins of a post-apartheid South Africa. Inspired musically, yet frustrated geographically, he relocated to London in 1997. While living there, Abrahams began recording as Portable, an experimental, atmospheric techno project with a strong African-percussion influence. When performing live like at Vrijland, he creates his music on the spot including live vocals.

Another act worth mentioning is Studio Barnhus from Sweden, a record label and DJ trio consisting of Axel Boman, Kornél Kovács and Petter. These guys have been regular guests at Trouw so should be familiar to a lot of people in Amsterdam. Boman and Petter have been personal favourites of mine for a while because of their great production, but when these three buddies, label managers and nachtdigital regulars all come together you can count on something special. Make sure you don’t miss ehm!
