Slowly but surely it’s been popping up more and more in the streets of Europe’s capitals in the past few years, with its vintage, almost toy-like design and deep-coloured, authentic images: the Lomography camera. Holding on to the analogue technique in these high-tech times, it makes its owner feel like he’s working a genuine craft – even if this is to be attributed more to the camera’s standard features than to himself. I sure did fall for Lomography’s charm instantly when I bought my first one two years ago, the Diana Mini. The Actionsampler followed within weeks, and to this day it’s still my favourite. But now a new camera is the object of my desire: the Belair, to be released this Thursday.
Vest Pocket Kodak
The Belair X 6-12, as it is named officially, is the world’s first 6×12 auto-exposure medium format camera and the first ever medium format Lomography camera to shoot in 9×12. The design reminds us of the vintage Vest Pocket Kodak camera that was in production in the 1910s and 1920s. The Belair’s features, on the other hand, promise to be effortlessly modern. And with its promotional slogan being ‘Offering Lomographers never-before-seen sharpness, depth of field and ultra-wide photos, it’s ready to fly your medium format photography into a whole new dimension’, you gotta be curious.
The Belair has long been only available to pre-order on the internet, but: the official instore release of this new Lomography family member will take place this Thursday in the Lomography Gallery Store Amsterdam. Dresscode: wear your classiest vintage travel outfit to go with the classic feel of the camera and get ready to board.
