It’s that special time of the year again, and I’m not talking about Christmas. This weekend the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten opens its doors to us, during RijksakademieOPEN. No less than 56 resident artists from all over the world, working in various disciplines, will present their work. They will do this in their ateliers in the Rijksakademie building, which is a lot like a complicated maze. I took an art criticism class at the previous edition and actually got lost several times.
Last year, I must admit, it took me some time to get into it. All artists try to stand out and have an individual look on things. Besides getting literally lost, I felt lost in the highly conceptual art’s diversity as well. After walking around for a while however, I started to discover subtle parallels and similarities. That’s when the fun started. This event challenges its visitors to actually think. You won’t get simple art served on your platter, which forces you to go deeper. This is what makes RijksakademieOPEN so interesting.
