When I was a kid, my parents really wanted me to turn out smart, so they kept bringing me to theatres, museums and all sorts of other cultural places. I remember always being angry and bored on these days and secretly just wanting to go the playground and eat happy meals instead. My brother (equally bored) and me were constantly annoying my parents and making fun of what we thought was ‘so called’ art. We acted like we were connoisseurs and pointed at power sockets and the fire hoses and mocked our parents by sarcastically joking about the ‘wonderful colouring and design’.
Now that I’m older I’ve started to appreciate the paintings, and I visit museums without being forced to do so. Although I still don’t quite understand what people mean when they say that Mondriaan’s stripes are masterpieces, I can enjoy strolling around in a museum on a rainy Sunday. Now that Museumnacht exits, there are probably a lot less kids being dragged through museums. The immense programme and the wonderful atmosphere that the city breathes creates a unique experience for everyone.
