About the author
The name's Ciaran, a 27-year-old guy who loves the idea of a discovery, even if it actually isn't one. Among many other Sherlock Holmes adventures, searching for art and music is what keeps me going. High Five!

Don’t you sometimes think the world would be a better place without money? Trade School Amsterdam is setting the standard for just that. After successful start-ups all over the world, the free franchise system has been claimed here in Amsterdam as well. It’s a self-organized learning space that solely runs on barter. For the month of October you can follow classes in just about everything. And bring a book, picture frame, bicycle pump or an old pair of trainers in return.

The class I signed up for was yoga for beginners. There’s a first time for everything I guess, and it was my time to shine. Our teacher was Afaina de Jong, one of the initiators of Trade School Amsterdam. Upon her request, I presented her with two of my favourite novels as my barter item of choice. For the next hour and a half, there were eight of us on mats in the window display of W139 flexing our not so nimble bodies in unknown positions.

The photos probably speak for themselves. Go the Trade School website and pick out a class that suits you. To top it all off, there will be a barter closing event on October 27th at W139. From 17:00 all ‘teachers’ and ‘students’ are welcome to meet each other again and brainstorm for the next batch of classes. One rule for the closing event: bring a barter item! Think drinks, food, music or a surprise performance. See you there.
