About the author
After Rangleklods last week, Flying Lotus also falls in a musical category that could be termed ‘experimental’ or ‘complex’. And oh, ain’t it lovely. Until The Quiet Comes –the fourth album by the L.A. based producer and so-called laptop musician– was released two weeks ago, and has harvested practically nothing but praise. More modest than its predecessor Cosmogramma, its sound is much less in-your-face yet I still find it playful and challenging. In three weeks FlyLo will be in town to demonstrate his fascinating skills whilst headlining in Paradiso.
Multi-genre, multi-layered
Until The Quiet Comes takes you on a musical journey in which you’ll be likely to hear sixties soul elements, J Dilla beats and African drums. Add to that synthesizers and digital patterns paired with a specific style of singing, which at times remind of the beautifully smooth and dark sounds of Submotion Orchestra. Besides that, more jazz references are made throughout. After all, he is the great-nephew of Alice Coltrane, wife of John. All of the above, you might have guessed, points in the direction of a multi-layered album with multiple genres that seamlessly blend into each other. A masterpiece, if you ask me.
Will he be able to live up to these grand expectations? Honestly, I don’t know, but my guess is that he might well blow away his audience
So far, I’ve only heard raging reviews of Flying Lotus’ concerts, just as I did of his albums. Will he be able to live up to these grand expectations? Honestly, I don’t know, but my guess is that he might well blow away his audience. In a good way, that is. A good tip is to be prepared when you arrive at the concert: listen to Until The Quiet Comes a few times and wait for its magic to unfold. Anyhow, my hopes are up, especially for a performance that is highly visual as well as musical. View the video (by Kahlil Joseph) below, and you’ll know why.
