About the author
Mark Visbeek is a designer, musician, superstar, and loves illeism. Always looking to create beautiful things, I'm often distracted by the amazing stuff happening around me. My most important weapons are limitless amounts of love and a faux-French accent.

It’s Sunday and you’re hungover, angry at the world, at bartenders and most of all: yourself. No worries, we feel the same. That’s why we’ve invented Sunday Roast. A bi-weekly conversational ‘column’. A written one. Online. Every other Sunday, Mark and Sabrina vent about the horrible burdens and ungodly mishaps of their 21st century life. Usually reserved only for bars, we bring our problems right into your home. Sharing is sexy, and a problem shared is a problem halved.. You are cordially invited to our pity party.

Dear Sabrina,

An important thing to remember every once in a while is that all the things you do, or have to do, in life are more or less direct consequences of your own choices. We are luckier than others in having total freedom in making our own choices, but we’re not always aware of that fact.

I started studying because that’s what you’re supposed to do after finishing school. I was aware of the decision I was making, but I was 16 and undoubtedly biased by what my parents, teachers, friends and television told me. When you get older and try to shake off those bias by making choices based on what you really want, you start feeling free. But you also start to realize that you can’t blame others for all the shit in your life anymore. Everything that’s going wrong is your own fault. That’s fucked up, but it’s true.

..like a pilot leaving the cockpit to tell the passengers that they should stop the plane from crashing

So a lot of people with the freedom to take control over their own lives start hating themselves. Hating yourself obviously sucks, so their brains start trying to blame their shit on someone else. And blaming your own shit on someone else is like a pilot leaving the cockpit to tell the passengers that they should stop the plane from crashing. And a pilot blaming his passengers for crashing his plane is a bigoted asshole. And they suck.

So, people with freedom to make their own choices suck. Unless their brain works in an absurdly reflective manner and they only hate themselves, which actually sucks too. I think I’m moving to China, freedom sucks.

Be safe,

Mark
