Too many plans for the weekend? Let me narrow down your options by suggesting some events where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. Here’s where you weekend warriors should go to for next Monday’s hangover.
Friday & Saturday: Transnatural Festival – Opening Weekend @ Nemo
The opening weekend of Transnatural Festival is hosted by the progressive CTM (club transmediale Berlin) and the Amsterdam based FIBER Festival, who are offering you a programme full of art, design, performance and music by the best international DJs, artists and designers. Their night programme for the grande opening consists of none other than one of my favourite Scandinavian live acts out there, The Field. Also on the bill: Germany/USA based Stewart Walker (live), DJ Newworldaquarium and visuals by the Deframe collective. Just remember this before going: “while there may be a limit to what is achievable there is no limit to what we strive for.”
Saturday: NGHTDVSN @ Paradiso
NGHTDVSN’s vision is to bring the best of cutting-edge and innovative music, just like they did last time at a sold-out Paradiso. None other than electronica icon Max Cooper and techno powerhouse Stephan Bodzin will be headlining the main area while the topfloor will be the domain of one of disco’s most enigmatic and hyped duo of the moment: Tiger & Woods. Support comes from Terry Toner, Halve Soul, Les Deux & Rogor, Vriendje van Ferry and as if that wasn’t enough, the basement will showcase our country’s finest electronic live acts Daniel Zuur, 10dens, Zwaan, Some Chemistry, Sonurber & PSTL. One of the sickest line-ups I’ve seen Amsterdam’s pop temple lately.
Saturday: Ratio? @ Trouw
Ratio?? stands for timeless muscular house in all its glory. This time, they’ve invited Hamburg based tropical house meister Tensnake for a live set. You probably know him by now, especially after last year’s major hit Coma Cat. If you don’t, all you need to know is his music is deeply influenced by the early 80’s Boogie and italo disco sound. Support comes from Paris based Molly and Ratio? resident Melon. Remember, be there before midnight and admission is only €8, a bargain.
Saturday: Hexagon @ Pand 14
As a medium that focusses on cultural Amsterdam we have to incentivate organisations like Hexagon. If only for the overdose of art they’ll be offering this Saturday. Apparently three young people joined together and combined loads of creative ideas that resulted in a new type of experience involving serious partying and art. Different senses will be triggered during the visual trip into their world. Expect everything variating from fashion, design, photography, video art and installations within a special ambience. Entrance is free, so go support your local creatives Amsterdam.
Saturday: THIS IS Not Artis @ Canvas op de 7e
Finally, this Saturday Canvas is turning into a proper zoo featuring some of the best nu-funk and disco artists out there. For example Swedish ensemble Drop Out Orchestra, if you missed out on their performance at Buiten Westen, this is your best chance to make up for that. As if this wasn’t enough, (nu-)disco specialist NSFW will also make an appearance during this night of wildlife supported by Kraver. Dresscode? Go wild; seal clubbing, tigers & woods, vlindertuinbroek, Artis de Afterpartis & safari disco. Have an wonderful hangover you animals.
