To watch or not to watch? I will tour around Amsterdam’s cinemas and answer this crucial question every Friday. Without mercy, of course. Sucky films will be slaughtered, cinematographic pearls will be appreciated as such. Or the other way around. After all, good taste is in the eye of the beholder.
You Instead
You Instead may be the perfect summer film. It is about music, a huge festival and love. Adam (Luke Treadaway) and Morello (Natalia Tena) are two pop artists who get in a fight when they arrive backstage. A festival guard handcuffs them both and disappears with the key. Now Adam and Morello are stuck with each other and with each others boy- and girlfriend. At first they all really dislike each other, but after a while things start to change. The ending of the story isn’t that surprising. Still, it’s very romantic.
Director David Mackenzie shot this film only in a couple of days, because he was allowed to shoot at the biggest festival in Scotland: T in the Park. That fact gives You Instead the true festival vibe. With all the mud, beer and puke that comes with it.

Cloclo
I really have no idea why this film is showing in the Dutch cinemas. Cloclo is about a famous French singer from the sixties: Claude François. Who? Exactly. Cloclo was his nickname. Anyway, François was extremely popular and refreshed his style every once and a while. (Like a male Madonna.) Other then that: his personal life contains enough drama for a soap. He had a second son, which he kept a secret for many years. So yes, much material for a soap, not for a two and a half hour lasting biopic. The only interesting thing that keeps the film going is Jérémie Renier, the actor that plays Cloclo. Not a good enough reason to buy a ticket, though.

Apocalypse Now
You haven’t see Apocalypse Now yet? The classic film from Francis Ford Coppola and with great actors such as Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall? One of the best films about the Vietnam War? Go be ashamed of yourself. After the shaming you can close this huge gap in your cinematic life, because the classic is showing in Café Cineville tonight. And tomorrow night. So, no excuses. Go to De Uitkijk and treat yourself to this masterpiece. If you’ve seen it already, this is a good reason to see it again.
