About the author
As a freelance journalist, Anouk (26) usually writes about what other people do or like. In her precious spare time she watches arthouse films. Not a few. A lot, thanks to her trusted Cineville pass. Here she can finally share her film-fetish with the world.

To watch or not to watch? I will tour around Amsterdam’s cinemas and answer this crucial question every Friday. Without mercy, of course. Sucky movies will be slaughtered, cinematographic pearls will be appreciated as such. Or the other way around. After all, good taste is in the eye of the beholder.

The Raid

The preview of The Raid will be showing in Kriterion tonight. The Indonesian film was the public’s favourite at the Imagine Film Festival this year and is supposed to be one of the best action films in years. So, be warned, no time for soft emotions and chit chat. A SWAT-team has to ‘take’ a fifteen-store building in Jakarta, which is in the hands of a drug syndicate. It’s very much like a computer game, every store representing a new level. The team isn’t that well prepared and, even worse, they’re out of ammo at some point. You’ll probably understand, this film offers a great opportunity to turn your brain off. Love it.

Brammetje Baas

Brammetje Baas, don’t go there on a date, go with your little cousin or little whatever. This film is for the youngest kids, about five years old. I enjoyed it anyway, because of the script, actors and animations. Brammetje Baas is about Bram, a busy and intelligent boy that can’t wait to go to ‘groep 3′. (Weird facts: he can write and read already and he is 7 years old, hmm.) Although Bram is a smart kid that wants to learn, he doesn’t fit into the school system. He drives his teacher, meester Vis, crazy. Director Anna van der Heide wanted to make a film about how hard in can be to fit in. The term ADD is never mentioned, but it is clear that Bram has some sort of concentration disorder. In the end, all is well. It will make you and your little something very happy.

Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition

One of the best directors in the world has his own exhibition in EYE. Also, the best films of Kubrick are now showing in the new film museum: The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove and many many more. Take the ferry and treat yourself to these cinematic pearls.
