Instead of being bored out of your mind while looking at the Night Watch for the billionth time, you can now go to the Rijksmuseum, pick up your phone and scan it to see graffiti appear all over it, as if by magic. The Amsterdam-based agency Brilliant after Breakfast (never call them before ten in the morning) wanted to remix what is currently on offer in old institutions with their old art.

The Rijksmuseum, plagued by budget overdrafts and angry neighbours since the rebuilding never seems to gets done, has been offering the same collection for many years for tourists the world over. It must have been some special Korean holiday last time I was there, and many kids were walking around too. I was listening intently to their teacher on all that was there to find. Well, now I can open Layar (a special app), put them in front of old works and see some modern day text appear!

Maybe the Night Watch is more than just an old painting in an old museum.

It’s great that in this way old art is transformed in new work, thus remixing the old and the new. It makes you wonder if maybe the Night Watch is more than just an old painting in an old museum. In fact it’s a really powerful image that can be twisted and turned into something new.

For more info check out Brilliant after Breakfast, and don’t forget to visit the Rijksmuseum to experience what they’ve created.
