Too many plans for the summer? Let me narrow your options down by suggesting our cities best festivals where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s our advice for where you festival warriors should go to and start getting wild in the last weeks of August. First half of August here July editions here and here, June here, May here.

August 24th to September 16th: Magneet Festival 2012 @ Oostpunt

The Magneet Festival is an event with its visitor as headliners. Their ‘participators’ have the chance to give creative input through their co-creation internet platform and are able to contribute to the content of the event. Making the Magneet Festival the first crowd-sourced festival of its kind in Europe. Expect musicians, artists, theatre makers and many more expressive weird people. Just how I like it. Did I mention this festival lasts three weeks? Nice huh.

Saturday August 25th: Voltt Loves Summer 2012 @ NDSM Docklands

Voltt loves summer used to be my absolute favourite festival around Amsterdam. I’ve been visiting this festival tradition-wise for the last four years. You look anywhere around you and run into people you know while getting wasted to either minimal and techno or the deeper sounds in the tent area. Although it is getting ridiculously expensive, the line-up just keeps getting better every year, with this years’ topping everything they did before. Some of my favourite names out there such as Marek Hemmann, Matthew Jonson, Tale of Us, Robag Wrume, Mathias Kaden, Monolake, Pillowtalk and Pan-Pot are bound to make this one spectacular. I’d say this would probably be my top festival. Next to Buiten Westen of course.

Saturday August 25th: Mysteryland 2012 @ Floriade Terein Haarlemmermeer

You can say a lot about Mysteryland. About its ‘older’ crowd, commercial programming and such. Yet the Mysteryland location is often described as one of the most special and unique festival locations in the world. With fairytale like surroundings, open fields, intimate spaces and a million stages. I gained a lot of respect for what would probably be the most legendary dance festival our country has to offer after seeing this documentary. The only thing is that it is so damn expensive. If you’re into all-round dance music, superstar DJs and don’t care about money, you might want to check it out sometime.
