Too many plans for the summer? Let me narrow your options down by suggesting our cities best festivals where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s our advice for where you festival warriors should go to and start getting wild in the first weeks of July. May edition here, June here.
Friday & Saturday July 6/7: Pitch Festival @ Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek
It’s July! Let’s kick off this month’s festivals with the second edition of PITCH, on July 6th & 7th in western Amsterdam. With a mind blowing line-up featuring the best of contemporary dubstep, beats, (deep) house, crossover, pop, disco, UK funky and mucho more. PITCH is about live sets. Not only by the presence of many bands, but also by producers and DJs together with their favourite musicians. I remember being there last year and really enjoying the vibe around the Westerpark area, but I do hope they improve the setting and sound system at the Westergasfabriek this year! Gui Boratto, Maya Jane Coles, SBTRKT, Modeselektor, Gaslamp Killer, Gold Panda, The Weeknd, damn.. some of my favourite artists out there. Chapeau.
Thursday to Saturday July 12/13/14: Amsterdam Bass Festival @ Melkweg
As if we didn’t have enough ‘new’ festivals around this town. From July 12th ’till July 14th Melkweg Amsterdam presents the very first multi-day bass music / dubstep festival of The Netherlands. First names confirmed: Caspa, Ed Rush, DOOM, Skism, Foreign Beggars, Plastician, Zomboy, Faze Myake and 501. Melkweg was the first venue around here that gave dubstep music a stage and look where it has come to in 2012. In July, we celebrate this with three days of wopwopwop music brought to you by hosts like 50Hurtz, HOAX and Cable. More info on the line-up soon at amsterdambassfestival.com.
Friday July 13th: VRIJ Festival @ Olympisch Stadion
“I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I go to VRIJ and I understand!” Yes… Whatever they say. Anyhow, they spent some real dough on artists this year with four different stages featuring some of the top rated artists in the disco, indie, house and techno of the now. Especially if you look at their ‘Tandje Erop’ stage with Maceo Plex, Gabriel Ananda (live) and Subb-an, I say nicely done. Headliners of the main stage called ‘Let Loose’ (again, great copyrighting skills) are The Magician, Kakkmaddafakka (live), Tensnake (live) and Crazy P (live). The two remaining stages will be hosted by Club NL and Smirnoff. This festival really smells like millions of hot blonde women wearing Ray Ban’s and waving their Proseccos like they never did before!
Saturday July 14th: Buitenspelen @ Secret
What, another new festival in town!? That’s right, this time it’s our two most sportive organizations joining forces for what could be the most extraordinary outdoor playground of the summer: Buitenspelen. Al right, on the menu for this event: Edu Imbernon, personal favourite Rahaan, Boris Werner, Cinnaman, Tom Ruijg b2b William Kouam Djoko, Antal b2b San Proper and many more. Besides all these DJs, my expectations are high for the surrounding performance acts, decor, props and all that. Location and full line-up announced soon!
Saturday July 14th: 18hrs Festival @ Balkenhaven, Zaandam
Two things make this 18hrs Festival unique. One, is the fact that it lasts for 18 hours (!). Two, is the strange location in Zaandam. Other than that, they have a cool variety of hosting partners, a decent line-up, and every other ingredient you need for a pleasant festival. Who are we talking about? How about Rejected vs. We Are Connected, Bar27 loves Linke Soep, Mike Ravelli & Miss Melera, Click and Rotzooii featuring artists like 2000 And One, Deetron, Gabriel Ananda, Luna City Express, Kaiserdisco and many, many more. This one is for the true ravers amongst us.
That was it for now, Amsterdam. Next week we do the second half of July!
