Whether you went out last weekend to check out an uber-geeky beat magician or a depressingly awesome indie rock band, we all know there’s always some serious musical talents rocking around the Dam. You might not recognize them all yet, but don’t worry, you will soon. In this series of interviews we talk to remarkable artists about their music and their inspirations.
I have personally known Gijs, one half of L’Atelier, since high school. Well actually, I knew Gijs in high school. I can’t really remember ever seeing him after that again. Gijs was the kind of kid who always wore the newest clothes, like those Nudie Jeans who were never washed before. You could put a key or shell in it, and then let it wear through your jeans. After a meeting with my closet for probably two hours I met up with Gijs (again) and Paul to talk about their upcoming gigs and popularity.
Hi Guys! Tell me, how did you guys start as a duo. After all my good research I still don’t know…
Paul: “Well, Gijs used to sing hip-hop, and I mixed his songs.”
Me: “OMG, Gijs did you really… Well now I know why I couldn’t find anything about how you guys started!”
Gijs: “Haha yeah right, well we both had our gigs at small parties in Utrecht and at business events. One time we played together in de Club Rex in Hilversum and it kind of worked. So from there on we started to play together. We are officially a duo for one and a half year now.”
What do you guys do if you disagree about something? If you ever disagree about things?
Both: “YES!!”
Me: “about what?”
Paul: “Uhm well, I actually don’t really know about what…”
Gijs: “Maybe we don’t. It happens that we both agree on a mix being finished and that Paul starts editing it after all. But, I always think that Paul made it better afterwards, so I guess we have more words with Thijs, our booker, haha! But we can’t really talk about that, that wouldn’t be nice.”
How did you guys develop yourself to the DJ duo you are now?
Paul: “I think we mix our sets more properly. We used to play one song, and then another one. Now it’s more a set.”
Gijs: “And we have better equipment by now.”
The past year you guys became more and more popular, what is it that you would want to achieve in the near future?
Gijs: “Being part of Awakenings or WTTF festival. But these are really big things.”
Paul: “But we are going to do a lot of fun things this summer, like hosting a beach party together with morgen.am, celebrating the first birthday of our label Kreativ, and Queen’s Day at the Wolvenstraat.”
Gijs: “His mom is even coming, haha!”
Me: “What? Your mom is coming to your gig on Queen’s Day?”
Paul: “Yeah, that’s cool right! I’m really proud she’s coming…”
Me: “Ah that’s cute!”
If you could choose one DJ or artist to work with, who would that be?
Gijs: “I would like to launch a track with Liebe Detail.”
Paul: “Homework is on my list! And Jimpster of course.”
What’s the most freaky thing you’ve experience during a gig?
Gijs: “Pff a lot! Paul is always too drunk, haha. But there’s one time that stands out though. We were at Schiermonikoog with our label. There was supposed to be some kind of festival, but I think there were only about 40 people. We were just having some fun and fooling around. We went swimming in the ocean and saw jellyfish which we took out of the ocean. We all started to kiss the jellyfish because they are the mascot of our label from Kreativ. Luckily nobody got bitten, but it wasn’t a very smart thing to do…”
Your label, Kreativ will soon be celebrating its birthday. Tell me more about that.
Paul: “The label is throwing a gig in the Chicago Social Club. All the artist from Kreativ will be there and it’s going to be another crazy night.”
Me: “Hopefully without kissing jellyfish this time!”
