We can be proud of our city for having artists such as Berndnaut Smilde (1978, Groningen), who makes installations, sculptures and photos. He creates temporary spaces based on the location given to him, the exhibition space. This is what Smilde says about Nimbus II, the featured image:
“I imagined walking into a classical museum hall with just empty walls. There was nothing to see except for a rain cloud hanging around in the room. You could see the cloud as a sign of misfortune. You could also read it as an element out of the Dutch landscape paintings in a physical form in a traditional museum space.”
Smilde started experimenting with the creation of his cloud back in 2010 by using smoke, moist and backlighting. To me the technique is not so much of interest; what I find interesting that he managed to create and capture a fleeting moment. Which results in a image which all of us can project our own feelings onto. His work was recently bought by Saatchi, so I see no route but up for him. I’ll let you guys know when he has a exhibition in Amsterdam so we don’t have to leave the city.
