What’s on display at our beloved FOAM photography museum? Exactly 500 images by 140 photographers in a combination of reportage, portraiture and fine art photography.
It is difficult to refrain from name dropping with the likes of: Lilian Bassman, Chuck Close, Philip Lorca diCorcia, Gregory Crewdson, Thomas Demand, Rineke Dijkstra, Mitch Epstein, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Jeff Koons, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Annie Leibovitz, Ryan McGinley, Hellen van Meene, Jeff Mermelstein, Simon Norfolk, Paolo Pellegrin, Gilles Peress, Sebastiao Salgado, Andres Serrano and Malick Sidibe.
What I find interesting about this exhibition is that besides hundreds of individual interesting images to look at, you have the possibility to take a peek inside the selection process. Contact sheets and tear sheets are also exhibited. We will be able to see how projects evolved from assignments by The New York Times into themes the artist carried on, exploring even further, deeper in his or her own career.
The exhibition is co-curated by Kathy Ryan (award winning director of photography NY times magazine) and Lesley Martin, publisher of Aperture foundation’s book program. These two should know what they are talking about.
Philip Lorca diCorcia, one of my favorite photographers
Philip Lorca diCordia, often stages real life situations, making them feel almost surreal by his ways of artificial lighting. See here
