Check out Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for ‘small talk’), Amsterdam’s foremost and most important platform for the exchange of elevator-pitch style presentations in twenty slides each taking twenty seconds. The Pecha Kucha method was invented by a Tokyo-based company looking for a new platform to exchange ideas, and is now used in over a hundred countries worldwide.
What to see?
The Amsterdam edition, now being held for the nineteenth time, will allow you to be part of an inspirational evening with artists, entrepreneurs, mad hatters and whoever has a crazy idea that needs to be shared with the world. Check out Pinar and Viola for example, a graphical design duo that is turning graphical design in an entirely different direction by scanning and using what they see in the cultural umfeld, resulting in what that they describe as ‘Estatic Surface Design’. Their newest project concerns the visual representation of political sex scandals that in their opinion serves to prove that there is very little difference between the general public and its politicians.
You most definitely should also check out the work by Reed van Brunschot. Her work shows ‘how everyday objects can be presented in totally new ways’, which in my opinion has led to some very interesting imagery such as inflatable furniture. Not to be used in the pool, but to be shown in galleries and museums.
Time for some action! Make sure you make it to Pecha Kucha Amsterdam, and don’t forget the talk, bites and drinks.
