Too many plans for the weekend? Let me narrow your options down by weekly suggesting the events where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s where you weekend warriors should go to for next Monday’s hangover.
Friday: Closer @ Klinch, Melkweg
It’s the second Friday of the month and that means it’s time to get closer again at Leidseplein’s Melkweg. For the last few months this event has distinguished itself by mainly booking upcoming live crossover artists in the world of experimental electronics. This time around they’re treating us with 3 live acts and 4 DJs to get through the Friday night. Who are we talking about? None other than techno wunderkind and ex TWSTD DJ contest winner Applescal (live), Cardboard Motel (live), an ensemble of progressive percussionists called Distant Drummers (live), our friend Jorn Liefdeshuis, Tundra, Luc Mast and Mattikk. Very interesting line-up for music lovers, go support!
Friday: Format – Shinedoe’s B-day Bash @ AIR
The last edition of AIR’s popular techno night FORMAT sold out once again which means host Juan Sanchez is doing some fine business and people are liking it. This Friday he invites two legends of our capital’s dance scene: Steve Rachmad and birthday girl Shinedoe with a special birthday DJ set. Supporting the two will be AIR resident Limon and Mr. Sanchez himself. Oh yeah, another thing I really enjoy at FORMAT nights are the visuals surrounding the club walls provided by VJ Escapation. Can’t miss, good luck with the hangover.
Sunday: Next Monday’s Hangover – Out in the Open @ Recreatiegebied Gaasperplas + after @ Melkweg
Loyal readers will be familiar with the weekly night-life guide you’re reading right now. Really loyal followers will also know we’ve hosted a few events ourselves under this name: a big rave in an old but formal ‘ballroom’ which is normally used for weddings, back in March, and the legendary Queen’s Day bash Hannekes Kroon. We’re not stopping there though, we’re on our way up! Our next event? Next Monday’s Hangover – Out in the open, a music-art-fashion festival this Sunday!
Music will be represented on three stages, hosted by the Amsterdam based organisations Pleinvrees, Squz and Lazy Sundays. Who have we booked? Berlin based duo AKA AKA (live) are getting their debut in the Netherlands for example, and they are bringing their live trumpet playing friend Thalstroem to take the house down (watch the interview we recently did with them). The Irish but Berlin based Chymera (live), British talented producer Lone (live) and Frenchman Joris Delacroix (live) are a few other foreigners already booked, and they are all a sure bet for heating up a nice summer day in the park. Other names you might have heard of are Olivier Weiter, Compuphonic, Terry Toner, Daniel Zuur (live), Dekmantel Soundsystem, William Kouam Djoko (live), Pete Bandit & Jason Shae and Bob Nagel & Maarten Bloem to name a few. If you miss out on the festival you can always choose to go clubbing at the after party at Leidseplein’s infamous Melkweg where Joris Delacroix, Arjuna Schiks, Boss & Harris and other surprises are bound to rock the hangover of the year!
