Too many plans for the weekend? Let me narrow your options down by weekly suggesting the events where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s where you weekend warriors should go to for next Monday’s hangover.
Friday: Sonic Warfare Outlook Pre Party @ Melkweg (2×2 give-away)
Man, have we got a weekend and another massive hangover ahead of us. Let’s start off with this Friday’s Sonic Warfare extravaganza featuring Silkie, Quest, RSD, Jack Sparrow and local talent DJ+. The night’s theme is a warm up for this summer’s Outlook festival, which is basically the most prominent festival for dub and bass-music lovers around Europe. Great line-up, good sound-system, easy location, why not try to win two tickets for this event by posting a link to your favourite dub track below this post on Facebook? Damn right it’s worth it.
Friday: Plak @ Chicago Social Club
Second time in 2011 Plak takes on the Chicago Social Club with it’s massive Funktion One sound-system. Taking the underground to the club without trying to lose their vibe. Burnski from the UK and local hero ONNO are invited to shine at the mainstage, and the small area will be entertained by Plak’s loyal residents. I kinda miss an edgy element to this party though, oh whait, an afterparty? Yeah of course, from 4.30am on the party goes on in ClubUp ’till atleast 8 in the morning. Sweat!
Saturday: Electronation invites Max Cooper @ Sugar Factory
Oh yeah, one of my top rated DJ/producers of the moment is hitting our to town this Saturday. Yes, yes, it’s time for some decent electronica in Sugar Factory with none other than Max Cooper! This UK based scientist annex producer is the living proof that these very diverse lifestyles can be effortless combined live on the dance floor. His music is an amalgamation of techno, house, electro and minimal and is best described as highly emotional electronica. Support on this night comes from our home-grown electronica hero Applescal!, a techno-wunderkind and former “Grote prijs van Nederland”-winner. To the critical electronica lover: see you up front!
Saturday: SMOG @ VLLA
The first edition of a new concept called SMOG at a raw location in Amsterdam called VLLA, which actually used to be a funeral centre. I know a lot of people in Amsterdam always look for the weirder parties at odd locations outside of the ‘regular’ club scene. There’s even a sort of theme, involving old clothes from your grandparents and the industrial revolution, the time when serious smog was created. Starting from 3pm, expect comfortable disco tunes, good house and deep techno. Names? Harde Baas, Roger Gerressen, Kadir Pelit, 10dens (live) and a few others. FYI, just a limited amount of tickets left!
Sunday: Trouw op Zondag with Tensnake @ Trouw
Once again, I just want to state that I think the monthly concept of ‘Trouw op Zonda’ is genius. You can grab a bite or do a dance with a crowd that’s mixed with people both freshly off the boat and ones who have been raving around for the last 12 hours. This specific Sunday brings us another heavy weight in the electronica scene: Tensnake. You’ve all heard his instant hits Coma Cat and Congolal some time at a random party. Especially for all the fans that got a ticket to see the man during ADE, this is his chance to make up for his cancellation then. Hope it was worth the wait!
Sunday: Cocoon on the Beach @ Woodstock 69
Amsterdam’s favourite party venue for beach lovers is by far Woodstock 69. I remember seeing Paul Kalkbrenner there last summer at the end of the beach-season and I was heavily pleased with the atmosphere over there. What does Cocoon on the beach offer us this time? Extrawelt (live)! Supported by local heroes Sascha Dive, Olivier Weiter, Bas Amro and Frenk Wiersma. Great sunday line-up if you ask me. Plus, good news for all people who have public-transport stress after a nice day at the beach: throughout the summer, LIJN20 will provide a bus service from Bloemendaal-beach to Amsterdam Central Station. Cheers.
