Too many plans for the weekend? Let me narrow your options down by weekly suggesting the events where you can meet, dance and drink with Amsterdam’s finest crowds. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s where you weekend warriors should go to for next Monday’s hangover.

Friday: Cassette Collectief with Mark E @ Chicago Social Club

People, our dear friends of Cassette Collectief have something to celebrate: it’s their 2 year anniversary! For the occasion they invited no other than UK’s up and coming DJ/producer Mark E, not only is this his first ever show in our country, but in three weeks his full-length album will be released. Basically, our friends are writing some sort of history by bringing the guy over. Obviously Cassette residents Simon Weiss and Bert de Rooij will be standing behind the decks providing our ears with warm disco, intense deep-house, soulful Detroit house and compelling slo-mo.

Friday: FORMAT 1 YEAR! @ AIR

Another player in the game that has something to celebrate is FORMAT. Juan Sanchez, AIR and our friends from Misc Agency created this new techno party concept called FORMAT a year ago. Since then they’ve managed to book some big names in the industry and even host a main stage at Amsterdam’s upcoming festival Amsterdam Open Air. For the occasion though, they’ve brought along two of my favourite dark minimal techno superstars: Gaiser and Len Faki. Next to that, the guys from Boel op Stelten will be hosting the small area with my guilty pleasure Mirella Kroes and to complete the evening the latest mapping techniques will be used to set the right mood with visuals by VJ Escapation. Sounds like a right way to spend your first birthday to me.

Friday: Closer – Studio Barnhus night @ Klinch, Melkweg

Once again, this quote from Closer says it all: “We are new, young and attractive. We are slightly mysterious but always kind. We are romantics, but not the kind you see in movies. We are different but not weird, we are just like you, so don’t be afraid. We are Kraftwerk’s interpretation of the summer of ’69. We are a Nosaj Thing remix of The XX, we are Apparat’s remake of The Field. We are DJ Koze stuck in an elevator with Actress. We are Pantha Du Prince playing Four Tet, James Holden playing Gold Panda and Caribou singing Animal Collective. We are Mount Kimbie just before they got big, we are that one Radiohead track, you know, that really good one.” This time with quality Studio Barnhus DJ’s Petter, Axel Boman, Kornél Kovács and our friend and Closer resident Jorn Liefdeshuis.

Friday: Rollerdis/ko @ Studio K

Rollerkings & queens, B-boys & B-girls, disco freaks and funk addicts; they all rediscovered the phenomenon of dancing on skates to the sounds of contemporary DJs such as Harry Foolish, Ome Ad, Duke John, Han Solo, Mechanische Turk and B-Funk. I haven’t gotten to experience this myself yet, but the word is beer and skating can provide very interesting situations, which makes me curious. If you still have skates deep in your closet, bring them along! If you don’t, there’s a a limited amount of pairs you can borrow for the night. To get an impression, check the video beneath.

Friday: Amsterdam Student Festival DJ contest @ SMART Project Space

When I was a ‘hardcore’ student I used to visit this initiative; I even participated with a band of mine a few years ago. Just like Overdose.am, it provides a great platform for young cultural, creative and Amsterdam-based talent. Since we write about DJs and parties a lot on this weekly guide, I thought I’d focus and invite you to their DJ contest. Not only is it interesting to see what kids are doing out there, we at Overdose.am promised to book the winner of the night at one of our upcoming events this year! Contestants are: Freddy de Noord, Marco & Marcoen, Remko Akkerman, Tim Senders and our friend Marko Nikolovski. Expect a grand finale to the night with a guest performance by DJ Mark Norman. Go support, fingers crossed!

Saturday: Boston Strip @ Studio K

After all that partying on the Friday night, it may just be time for a cheap and cheerful night. Maybe even a free one. The guys from the Boston Strip nights in Studio/K don’t care about making money, they just want an enthusiastic crowd to join them, enjoy bare tunes and that London style party vibe. Just click ‘attend’ on Facebook for guestlist spots to bounce with DJs Lautek, Faber, Mudde, Ruben X and DDK. Vibes: Disco, House, Techno, Anything UK (Funky, Grime, Dubstep, Hiphop, Dancehall, Hungarian Folk, 10 subs, 6 tops and big bass soundsystems. Bam!
