About the author
As a spoiled kid I always thought museums were boring. I’d rather stay at home and play Mario Kart on my Nintendo. It wasn’t until my early adolescence that I got to appreciate other kinds of art than film or music. I do believe that museums can improve their character by adding some contemporary spiciness to their expos.
Luckily, these aspirations are being realized. For example on Friday May 13th the infamous ensemble behind Amsterdam’s legendary museumnacht (n8) is organizing a ‘Nachtsalon’ at Huis Marseille; museum for photography. An evening filled with a films, live music and geo-spots amongst others. Yes, an event combining almost every aspect of what we write about on this cultural platform. A few examples of what you can expect during this cultural journey:
- Creative activationists of Curious Behaviour presenting their unpredictable smell-orientated theatre to remind us of places we visited.
- Expo’s on round-the-world photography by Marrigje de Maar and Bert Teunissen.
- Fresh indie-folk music played by local rockstars ‘Bird on the Wire’.
- Mini-lectures based on ‘China on Spinach’ with critical speakers on museums, media and tradition in China and the Netherlands.
- A grand finale in the basement of Huis Marseille with international foods, beverages and an interactive performance by DJ duo Zanzibar (Some Chemistry & Stijn Sadee); playing soundtracks to your journeys.

Photography documenting poetic interventions at Huis Marseille
Scarlett Hooft Graafland is an artist who goes to the outback and often desolated areas where nature's beauty is a relevant feature. She underlines this beauty with her own interventions. She uses her photography to document these installations which I like to call: 'poetic interventions'. More often than not, the materials used in the intervention have a strong connection with the location or play on events going on in that location. The photographs aren't just interesting but also layered and sophisticated. (..more)
Ghostly poetry in Huis Marseille – An Interview with Dayanita Singh
Do you recognize the feeling of photograph totally sucking you into its atmosphere? Well, Dayanita Singh's work manages to do that to us. Her photographs often have a meticulous use of light and visual construction, with a touch of poetry. They make you drift into the world that she creates in her mind. The beautiful museum for photography Huis Marseille has organized an exposition around the collected work of Dayanita Singh, and we had the opportunity to interview her while she was visiting Amsterdam.
